JUST AN INCIDENT
Waverly—A prominent Broad
street merchant started to go down
into the basement of his store this
morning He was going down
backward. Some boards laid on
the steps. He stepped on the
boards. He then slid down the
rest of the distance, At the bot-
tom was a box full of waste mater-
ial. He ran his head into the box.
Then he expressed himself. We
will not repeat what he said for the
resistive powers of our press are
limited.
TOWN BOARD MEETING
Waverly—The Barton town
board held a meeting yesterday.
Two truant officers were appointed.
D. O. Springer of Lockwood and
C. Victor Kinney of Barton. Three
bids were received for doctoring
the poor. Dr. C. F. Griswold bid
$235, Dr. lLcon Betowski, $295,
and Dr. F. H. Spencer $250. The
board awarded the contract to Dr,

Waverly—A woman left a baby
in a carriage standing in front of
the New York dry goods store this
morning There was nothing to
hold the carriage and it ran off the
walk and tipped over the curbstone
into the street. The child struck
face down in the road, but by good
fortune was not badly hurt.

Through Fear Skipped Out.
NEW YORK, Nov, 22 — District At.
torney Jerome now knows the pame of
the man who furnished the £5000 cash
ball that enabled Krup, the floater, to
criminal branch of the supreme court
bere a few hours before Lis case was
called for trial
The name was revealed to the grand
Jury by Charles P. Dillon, Krup's
counsel, who turned the money over
to George Simpson. Simpson deposited
It with the city chamberlain
Dillon gave the important informa
tion only after he had been taken be
fore Recorder Goff and Instructed to
answer every question put to him
rather than risk imprisonment. When
the grand jury adjourned Dillon was
taken to the office of Assistant Dis
trict Attorney Sandford, where he was
questioned at leugth about the ball
transaction. John J. Murphy, Alder
man Gaffney and some other prom!

John Newman, a wealthy contractor,
was one of the witnesses subpoenanl
He went on the original bond for Krup
for $1.000 He was not called to the
grand jury room, but told the reporters
that it was not he who put up the
$5,000,
There is a story carrent that Krup
had agreed to plead gullty and “take
Lis medicine” under agreemer® that he
sbould be paid $5,000 upon his release
and that every effort would be made
to secure him a pardon. But, the
story goes, Krup got cold feet as soon
as be attained his liberty on ball and
justead of showing up for trial as be
promised be skipped
It has been learned that the man
who put up the $5000 cash ball for
sweeper of 281 Third avenue
Pickett has been subpoenaed by At-
torney General Mayer to appear be-
fore the grand jury today. Through
Lim the authorities hope to learn whe

Justice Davy in the criminal branch
of the supreme court sentenced the
first of the men arrested in connection
with violations of the election law at
the recent municipal election. The man
sentenced is Edward Meade of 02 Bar-
row street. Meade pleaded gullty to
having voted in the Fifth assembly dis
trict on the name of John F. Foley of
119 Waverley place after having voted
ou bis own name. He was caught
through making a mistake lo the ad-
dress of the real Foley, which 1s 119
Washington place. Meade was sen
tenced to prison for a period of not less
thau two years nor wore than three
years and six months. Meade was evi
dently staggered by the severe sen
tence

standard English word was indorsed
by the delegates to the conférence of
the church federation lo Carnegie ball
It was termed n general favorite, and
it was the unanimous opluion that ne
other word would do to describe what
was meant by It when used in a cer-
tain sense, Several delegates wanted
the federation to eliminnte it from res
olutions which bad been passed and to
substitute the syvouym “dishonesty”
but the latter was voted down as not
conveying in full the idea coutaiped ia
