His father carried the mail from Athens to Leraysville, most of the time being obliged to travel on foot. Wesley performed that duty after his father retired in about 1842. Wesley was a sol- G 8th P. Cav. This was the regi- ment that made the famous charge at Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863, and is immortalized in poetry as Keenan's charge, After the re pulse of the 11th corps General Sickles directed Pleasanton to take command of the artillery and the latter hastily collected 22 guns, consisting ol his own and the 3rd corps batteries. There was no time to load or aim the guns as Jackson's entire corps were closing in on the routed troups. This enemy in check until the artillery was in working order. There was but one way to delay Jackson and that was to throw a force of caval- ry in front of the pursuing troops, and it was well known that this force would be annihilated. Gen Pleasanton rode up to where Major Keenan sat on his horse and gave 400 cavalry against the 10,000 men who were rushing forward with a yell. To this he agreed and led his men into the gap, himself being impaled on the enemies’ bayonets, and half of his men going down in the storm of death dealing missles. We read of this charge but little realize there are men in the quiet Walks of life who took part in them. Sustained Slight Shock Athens—W. H. Shaw sustained a slight shock of paralysis this morning.
