Petitions Against Pranchise
Athens—Petitions are being cir-
culated asking the borough council
not to pass the Athens, Sayre and
South Waverly Railway franchise
over the veto of burgess Macafee.
There seems to be a wide spread
feeling among our citizens that the
burgess has given good reasons
for vetoing the bill and that no
| until the sentiments of the business
community shall be learned.
An Honorable Record
Athens —=While in Denver re
cently a reception was given to thie
Pennsylvania comrades one ev ening
by the resident citizens of that city
from the Keystone state, and we
had the pleasure of a quict conver
sation with Judge Torrence of
Minneapolis, who was acquainted
with Hon. O. D. Kinney and Col
|C. H. Graves, recently appointed
mintster to Sweeden and who took
with him from Athens
Judge Torrence was enthusiastic
over the high personal qualities
and accomplishments of Colonel
Graves and of his splendid soldier
record. The United States now
occupies such a high place in the
family of the world's great powers
that its representatives are accord-
ed the most exalted positions in
diplomatic circles, and when the
ambassador to foreign courts can
carry with him the record of heroic
service in the army for freedom,
such a record enhances the dignity
and splendor of other gifts. Such
qualifications Col. Graves possesses,
and we are informed that when
things were mentioned to President
Roosevelt by the member of con
gress who interested himself in the
colonels agpointment the president
began at once to cast over in his
mind what honor he could bestow
upon him. Col. Graves, although
surrounded by the splendors of the
royal court, has not forgotten his
old comrades and has sent a letter
to his G A. R. post in Duluth in
which he describes a friend he has
met in that far off land who was
an American soldier and fought in

distinguished himself in his own
