4*m-compared with those in this Degree we

thita to state what 30 per cent. reduction would

ber:the wages paid to outside la& rzrs iu the
sehuyikill Ite,dorr was $3.25 per. week. These
wages are too low ter men working at the mines,
and .nothing but an: overstecked - market
,could have Mired them-down to thisfigure. We
predicted' at , the coudnencementtof the season
that the price, Of coal would - he low, but we.
hardly expected that it would' go. as low as it'
didrand that( was the - Mason ` why we urged l i
upon• the men ln Schuylkill County so strongly
to accept the lower basis, which, ,if they had
done, several •millions of dollars would have
been raved tO. labor here and our, trade
would not have proved half ss disastrous as it
has been.
To the public abroad w,e will say that there is'
- - no necessity that coal 'Should advance over 50' .
'cents a' ton, and this'advanceought fo take place
'in the Coal Regi ma, but beyond.thLs there is no
reason whatever that it should 'advance. The
market for .the Winter months can and
gill be supplied by those Who, i . eolith:me
to' work in the different Regions.—The.conduct
of these companies in paying these high wages
while.Ciasi was declining, is attributed to tee
causes. One was to break up the union of the
A. ip the different counties by paying
high ivages and keeping their men at work, to
' that they would not united with the men in .
the other counties. In , this they succeeded.
"When the *Schuylkill men called upon their
employees to suspend to assist those in
Schuylkill County to obtain the ° same wages,
they replied, "we are receiving full basis wages,
and why should we suspend? When we /im
pended last'year, the Operators .paid you basis
wages in Schuylkill, and you resurned, while'
we were standing out to obtain the basis. You
refused to help, us. then by going to work, and
why should we suspend to help you now f
This was the truth. The other reason given was'
that, these Companies, in conneetton with other'
corporations, desired to embarrass individual
operators-and drive them out of the business,
so that they could control the whole trade Of
that*egion, and the n th ey could control the
Clield'allo. These are the reasons that are 284
signed for their Mammal' course in
,paying AO
high wages; but the-price of coat . fell so low
that they wereabselutely losing on their busi
ness, by selling coal low and paying high wages,.
hence titie naive to redoes at-ogee—and it seems
that they.are now , hordering on the other ex=
tronal. So long as Schuylkill County was sus
pended those Companies could afford to :ley
the gages,because they receivekgond prices
for coal but the low prices, and the not ; very,
