'S L E.—The lass of life from ;explosions continues to
la , nrost lamentable, and It would certainly be most •
rinseetrily to dogmatise on the matter, 'and• assert
roundly that all those lamentable occurrences
ntlhtf~ ire avolded, yerat thesame time wei do not
to assert that many of theta would 'be pre
vented by the more liberal use of Safety-lamps. W e i
have found that In Wales and other-plaobs there
was a great prejudice on the part of the men.: net
the use of safety-lamps, an account of de
client light, and on the part of the masters 'on the
score of expense. =Now,
_we hold that both these
‘-iews are wrong. - As to light, if a man cannot work
will, the Davy-lamp he can work with the Eittruly,
and the sooner all miners learn to work with some
yJlansp the better, as its use is quite necessary
to the miner, if he wishes. to preserve his life, as st
good rifle is to the soldier, who wishes to destroy
life. And as to expense, the safety-lamp, niter the
tires purchase, costs less than any other kind of
light. One man will consume at least in Working a
:Min, or. turn fti. worth of ordinary eandlesi:snd
I eivy lanip unlit costs tor the same-time YA,.o that
there is a considerable saving on this head; which
'very soon recoups the cost of the lamp.
