them In various . particillark . Our.eeaders are
probably aware; that there
are three kinds of
papillae on the human tongue, the illifcirm or
conical,. the fungiform or club-shaped, and
the.cireumvallate. Von Wyss findia the fill-
form variety present in all'-the animals he
has examined' The others present differens
mg in difrernt instances- in; regard- to their
complexity, their, epithelialinventment; the
nature of their, secondary paPilke, and the
distribution, of the cup-shaped organs. He
'divides the animals he' has examined • into
several groups :—(i) Mau ; in whom the cir
cumvalhate and fungiforect papilla. are well
distinguished from one ;mother, that former
arranged-Iu the form of o; V oil the dorsum of
the tongue.; and alone havlng s econdary pap=
lilac on thar free termidal surface, whilet the
latter are scattered over_the whole dorsal sur
face. • Here the cup-shaped organs are situa
ted in large numbers over the lateral surfaces .
the eireuravallate papillte, and present a well
marked - club-shape. • (ii) Ox and sheep; pre
senting-numerous transitional forms between
the fungiferm and eircumvallate papillae.—
Secondary parillheand cup-shaped organs are
found distribtated over the surface ' , of loth':
the epithelial coating is level, frbm Which
processes extend between the secondary lair
like. 0) Pig and horse : posseaging only two
large - eircumfallate papillae on cacti side the
median thief Secondary papillae are found:
both on these mid o the fungiforan papillae ;
and tali-shape ar d
organs occur not only on the .
surface of loth these between the - secondary
papillae, but also -oil the , secondary papillae
themselves. a-I) Hedgehog, dog anti cat: in
which the eireumvallate andfungiform pap
illae are not always elearly'distangeishable
fromone another: both-are smaller than in
the preeeding groups: 'Their distribution- is
different, and thereare no secondary papil:-
he. As a 'consequence, .the cup-shaped or
gans are much lesaingularlY arranged and
less perfectliformed. (5) The fifth group in-*

in these . ,_animais only a palfinf eircumvallate
papillae, or sometimes "only- one. When fain;

ted as fine, Points over the surface of the
tongue.. Ther e are. no ' letsaindary papillae.
The distinguishing characteristic ' of this
group lies in the - arrangement Of the cult

chiefly in an area more pr leali distinctly vis
ible to the naked eye,fon each - side of the pos

be found that the stream*: of the papillae is
composed of deutse connective tissueg; travers

of the papillae seems 'sniootti. -- "Litetally the
epithelial layer is- of moderate thickness, the
superficial cells being tLatened, the succeed

it, amounts to five or six or taiore.‘- The api
ces of the cup-shaped organs 'perforate the
papillae, and project freely into the aspillarY
fissures. • The cupeshapedargan itself is com

There is no evidence to show- that they are
of a nervoxa nature, hut rather the contrary,
