"NO REST FOR THE WICKED I"
Tho result of last Friday's election was
most gratifying. Hoi ttotofe tlio Jolin
rcbleson clan have maintained undis
puted sway over the town and victory
was ceded them without a struggle. This
lime the desire to elect the favorites of
'Tammany No 2,' did not impress us as
being so strong as of yore. There
seems to bo a lack of oooperatiou among
the faithful and if wo may believe the
signs ot the times some luckless wights
will lose their occupation of they are not
more considerate in bestowing favor or
rather in fulfilling promises.
The advantages are not so much to
ns as the fact that we have beaten 'Tarn,
many No. 2,' in its own stronghold,
nd, bust of all, they are mad. It was
really amusing next day to see thorn
holding call meetings lu the bar rooms,
on the street corners, and in and around
the Court Home, that palladium ot their
hopes. No doubt, they quaffed long
and deep in their efforts to torget, but
yet their faces wear a dejected, sorrow-'
iug air indeed. Tammany is shrouded
in gloom ' Ilawcver, 'there is a balm
for those who weep,' and when Clan
Temple' holds its cabal in the old brick,
it can with pertcct consistency incorpor
ate that ancient hymn in its exercises,
whose opening stanzts run thus :
Plunged in a gulf of dark despair
We wretched sinners lit.' &c.
JJolow we give the return. The suc
cessful parties are eminently proper
men and we predict, will make efficient
officers.

During the past week the 'general markets
have ruled dull compared witli tho previous

A general dullness prevails, caused partially
by tho unfavorable weather ami bad condition

on tho account of the failure of Congress to
