THE WONDERS OF SEED.
Ii there upon earth a machine, is
there a palace, is thero even a city,
which caiituins ho much that is wonder
(ill as is enclosed in a single liltlo seed,
one grain of corn, one liltlo brown tp
pie seed, ono small seed of a tree, picked
up, perhaps), by a sparrow for her bttlu
ones, the smallest, of a poppy or a blue
bell, or even one of tho seeds lint are
so small that l hey float about in the air
invisible to our eyes? Ah! there is a
world of marvel and brilliant beauties
hidden in each of these tiny seeds.
About a hundred and fifty years ego,
tho celebrated I.uirie ih, who has been
called 'the father of botany,' reckoned
ubout 8,000 dilferent kinds of planln ;
and be then thought that the whole
number existing could not much exceed
10,000. But a hundred years after him,
M. do Uandollo of Geneva, described
about 40,000 kinds ot plants, and be
supposed it possible that the number
might even amount to 100,000.
Well, havo these 100.000 kinds of
seed? Have they ever deceived us?
Has a seed of wheat ever yieldnd barley;
or the Bcud ol a poppy grown up into a
sunflower ? Has a sycamore tree ever
sprung, from an acorn, or a beech tree
from a chestnut ? A lilllu biid may car
ry away the small seed of tho syuamoro
in its beak, to feed its nestlings, and ou
tho way may drop it en the ground.
Tho tiny seed may spring up and grow
whero it fell unnoticed, and sixty years
after, it may become a magnificent tree,
under which tho 11m kN of tin, valleys
and their shephenls may rest in thu
shade. Rural AVw Yorker. '
