reports aro daily
received of abuses cf freedmen, which
are suppressed as far as possible by tho
authorities- Tho military have arrested
a planter, living fifteen miles from that
city, who in ono day beat tlfreo women
to death nnd shot ono of their husbands
while pleading for them. Numorous
citizens promptly offered bail to any
amount which was refused.
