A.SINUULAR TRADITION.
Among the Seininolo Indians thero is
a singular tradition regarding tho white
man's origin ond superiority. They say
that when tfo Great Spirit made the
earth, he also ninilo three men, all of
whom "Ivoro fiir-ooinplcxioned; and that,
niter making them, he led them to the
margin of a small lake, and bade them

packages, and having felt the weight,
chose tho heaviest; the copper coloied

the packages wero opened, the first was
found to contain spades, lioes, aud all

DRUNKENNESS AMONG WOIEN,
Tho Round Table, publishes a stnrtling
article upon drunkenness among women,
It says tho vice is prevalent among fash-
ionablu ladies, and that some of themost
elogant of them will puss this. Summer
not at Saratoga or Nowport as usual, but
at an asylum for inebrhtes. The writer
intimates that the vico of fashionable
drinking is now moro prevalent among
tlio ladies than among tho gentlemen of
this country, that certain dressmakers
make it a point to furnish their custo
mers with drink, whilo in some stores
bottles of wine nio also kept on hand for
lady Bhoppors, and in others 'the mer
chants allow their boys to go to the near,.
est bar-room for liquor when ladies do
siro it. ' Whiskey and brandy aro the
favorito drinks of those ladies, and as
somo of tho saloons they tivquunt do not
have thoso liquors on tho bill ot fare, a
noat littlo sign "if yott do not see what
you want ak for it," given tho hint to
those initiated. Iu dressmakers' bills
llio significant item "suiull trimmings"
often covers up the expense ol liquors
which tlio lady has ordered through the
modisto wlopaiulers to hcrviliutcd UstoJ
while at tho watering places 'a bribe to
the waiter procures' a secret supply' of
lkiu6r,'whioh'by tho connivance of the
luudlord,is charged as "extra luncheons."
It is asserted that girls of eighteen,
daughters of most respectablo New York
merchants, have been Been groesly intox
icated in Jlroadwny stages and upon tho
public streets, and that no superiority of
intellect or social position is sufficient to
guard a lady against this vico.
