TURNIPS-PUliPLK TOl'S.
From tlio flint of July to tlio first of
August, turnips may bo put in. I prefer
the Purplo Tops. Tlicy may succeed
other curly crops; as onions, peas, grcon
corn, early potatoes, &a. Superphos
phate ofTuiio willlio found an excellent
Bubstituto for barn manure in the culti
vation of most turnips, .got excepting
vcn tlio mta bagu Iu putting iu tins
orop, tlio sowing should immediately
succeed the harrowing, and bo complet
ed while tho soil is moist and fresh to
inauro tho germination of tho seed.
Drilling is preferable to broadcasting, as
it enables the operator to adopt a more
thorough system of afterculture, and to
keep the soil in a condition tho most
favorable to the rapid and healthy de
velopment of the plants. Any light land
will prove congenial to this crop. Hone
dust is an excellent stimulant, and pos
sesses tho advantage of being cheap as
well as efficient. Theso turnips consti
tute a most excellent feed for cows and
young cattle, and when rasped and
mixed with charted hay, haulm, corn
stalks or straw, enable tho feeder to ef
fect a very important saving in the ex
pense of keeping them through the
winter. JloileJ and mixed with corn or
cob meal, they nlso furnish a most healthy
and invigorating ailment for store hogs
Sheop,likcwise,are very fond of them
When fed to these animals they should
be cut fine, ai.d fed with a little salt.
I have known excellent crops of tur
nips raised among Indian corn, tho eecd
being sown after or just beforo the last
dressing. The hoe will cover the seed
sufficiently deep, and as evenness ot dis
semination is not of qgsentiut importance,
its action will supersede tho necessity of
using tho rako. Soaking tho seed for
twenty-four hours before committing it
to the soil, in house lye, or urine from
tho stables, and rolling it in a mixture
composed of efldul parts of flour of brim
stone, plaster of Paris, and pulverized
charcoal, will bo found not pnly greatly
to facilitate the process of germination,
but tend powerfully to protect the same
from the ravages ot tho fly, mid other
nlligorous depredators which too often
prey upon tho plants. An occasional
dressing of tho plants after they are ful
ly developed, with tho same mixture,
will be found highly salutary, and secure
a rapid and healthy development.
Poudretto and guano have also been
used with ezcellcut success in the culti
vation oi the turnip, but an old pasture
land, recently broken up. no manure is
necessary except a slight dressing of
gypsum or good Bsb.es. Gcrmantown

TO DESTROY THE POTATOE BUG,
A correspondent of tho Prairio Far
mer thinks ho has found a perfect reme
dy for the potato bug, viz: One gallon
of coal oil to one barrel of water mixed
well togcthor. Spriuklo lightly upon
tho potato vines cut of a watorpot or
with a small brush, and they will disap
pear. On which tho editor remarks:
"If our readers would bear in mind that
as insects breathe through spiracles, oil
is more disastrous to them than any.
thing else, they would have tho e'ew to
the saving of tho most of their trees and
vines. Bark lice, scale insects, turnjp
flies, caterpillars, flea beetles, and in fact,
all insects which can bo reached are de
stroyed by it. Any oil will do, but it
must be kept stirred so as not to remain
on the top of water, and tor tliis feason
a brush or syringe is preferable to a
watering can. This mixture is also quite
beneficial to plants, as is manifest from
the healthy start they take after its ap
plication." MULES VS. HORSES.
In the warm latitudes tho mule will
perform labor that would kill a horse,
while in the temperate he is superior to
the horse as a drudge. His costot keep'
ing is not more than hull that of a horse,
while his years of labor are more than
wice as many. The longevity of the
niujo is well known. A gentleman
visiting the West Indies saw a mule at
work in a field, having then attained the
age of forty years. Owing to their
hardiness and cheapness of keep, they
are becoming a great favorite on tho nee
and cotton plantations of the south and
west. So far back as 1850 there wero
65,000 ofthese animals in Kentucky
alone.
Wheat Cuop. Farmers say through
Wisconsin there never was a prospect
for a better wheat crop than at prosont.
It looks now as though the wheat crop
would be all that was desired, the wot
stato of the ground keeping the chinch
bug away. Milwaukee Wisconsin.
Oark (fatten, an Illinois farmer, states
that one gallon of coal oil to a barrel oi
water sprinkled lightly over potato vines
will effectually destroy the bug.
Diukd FituiT. It is said that a little
sasafras bark sprinkled in with dried
fruit whon put away, say a handful to a
bushel, will keep it from worms three or
