ments of the day, and are content to live
as did one or two, or even three genera
tions ago, deprived of many of the lux
nries, if not some of tho necessities of

farmer so post himself as to know the
advantages as well as the disadvantages
of inventions, many a "bad sell'' would
be avoided, bad machinery thrown aside,
and better articles secured. How would
our merchants and tradesmen so readily
detect counterfeits, broken banks, itc,
were it not for tho latest bank note re
porters f How would they know the
bust markets and be able to supply us
with the bust goods, did they not take
timo tor investigation ? Just so with
the tanner. By means of knowledge ho
is enabled to mnko his land yield most
abundantly ; by scientific fanning he in.
creases bis yield, and must, therefore,
have the most perfect and rapid macliin
ery to complete his work of saving in duo
timo. This the inventive crenius has en
abled him to do at such a trilling expense
that, in almost. one season's timo, ho can
fully supply his firm with the most per
feet machinery and refund tho outlay.
Years of experience have fully tested
many valuable inventions which our far
mers aro still content to do without.
Why is this the case? Do not our fa
mers love ease ns well as others t Why
employ" so many makeshifts that will
meroly do, when good, complete and ef
ficient articles are within reach t It is
.evident that money invested in iinple
ments "which in one or two years time
will pay for themselves, is well invested
if it were only for the fact that you have
J,ho machinery left. You have more, you
bifvo time which is money, you havo ease
which is relief. You, also, become in
dependant of the many, contingencies
upon which labor depends, for with a less
number of hands you do your work iu
less timo, more neatly and at the time it
is needed, thereby saving hundreds of
dollars in quality if not iu quantity of
material. And tbon the vast burden ct
labor which it removes from tho family,
should be a great induco.nent. Why,
my dear friends, I would tell you that it
is much easier to feed a horse or to use
machinery than to cook for a number of
hands over a hot stove,' with the ther
momcter nt 90 or 100 in the shade But
if your fraternal feelings will not prompt
you to get a supply, then let your love
of ease appeal to your selfish nature for
gratification. Why not save the muscle
to supply the brain T Give the mind
timefor research, for investigation, fur I

starve tho mind, impoverish tho soul and
die as the beast that "knows not its Ma
ker." If you will do this by purchasing
