SETTING OUT AN ORCHARD.
Mb. Editor. In your issue of April
1st, is a oommunicatiou from (J. S. B.,
who scoiDB to have an idea Hint ettinr
trees (standard apple) two or tlneo limes
as close as is commonly clono, will bring
corresponding results. Ho proposes to
tot his trees 15 foot apart, instead of -10,
which will tako seven times ni many
trees, instead of two and a halt times, as
ho has it. I agree with him that it is
useless to cnuumher tho ground 12 or 15
years tor a half crop or less, when it is
just as easy to have a full crop. Neither
would I wish to wait 15 years fur an
object if I could attain it in seven; hut
apple trees don't boar a full crop in
seven years. My orchard has been out
16 years and has never had a full crop.
Your correspondent reus ons thus: ''If I
plant 40 trees, when they bear a bushel
each I shall havo but 40 busheU; but a
hundred trecss will give n hundred
bushels, and when largo enough to
yield five bushels each, 40 trees will give
200, and 100 trees 500 bushels." lie
also proposes to thm out his trees when
they begin to crowd. It his trees grow
l'ke mine did, ho will have to commence
thinning out in about seven years, or if
he lcit it until ho got from one to live
bushels to a tree, they would ho grown
to tall as to doly all after pruning to get
them in a proper shape. It is the nature
of trees to grow upward if they are in
the least crowded, and in 15 years I J
fancy his orchard would lescmblo a
young forest. And would they bear
enough apples to remunerate tho orchar
dist for his timo and ground if they
were thus crowded together and depriv
ed of sufficient light? I think not.
Now. I would set out trees not less
than 40 feet apart each way, and before
theycamo into bearing, or had attained
largo size, I would plant tho. giound
with corn or other crops, not having it
in with grass, and thus get a crop of
grain instead of apples, which would
benefit both the farmer And his orchard.
In cultivating the ground for other
crops the trees would receive sullicient
cultivation, and would come into bearing
nearly, if not quite as bo hi, as if the
ground was exclusively to tho trees
But il the trees wero planted as dose as
15 feet, they would grow too high and
would bear inferior crops, and would
thuscauscthe ownerdisappointmcnt. Or,
if they should do as well as he supposes,
he would think it a pity to cut down
such fine trecsj and would probably let
them stand until all .wen injureii by
crowding. Pear trees however, would
bear more crowding than apple trees
owing to the nnturo of pears to grow
upward mor than laterally, but I would
not set them closer than 20 by 30 feet.
I may be mistaken in my views of tho
natter, and thereforo I would be gratili
by having the opinion of others, as I
believe it is the duty of those who havo
information to impart it for the public
good. llnral American.
CLEANLINESS OF SWINE.
In one respect, farmers commonly
show tho worst of their management
in fattening hogs. These animals ap
preciate cleanliness, yet their owners
make thumjive in dirt, and then charge
them with'a natural fondness for filth.
This is oppression and blander combined.
Every person familiar with their habits,
knows thqt when clean straw beds and
other comforts are given them, they are
scrupulous to kct'p them clean. When
but up in a narrow pen, whore they
must eat, Bleep, and live in one appart
mont, they cannot but be uncomfortable;
and such a condition greatly retards
their thriving. A "hog pen" has bo
como proverbially a repulsive plaeo; this
is the owner's fault, and should never bo
suffered. There is no reason why it
should not bo clean, and even atlractive.
We hear farmers who raise grain say
that they have more straw than they can
sometimes use, while at the samo
moment their hogs havo not enough of
it to make a dry and tlean bed.
Animals can m ver thrivo well miles
kept clean. Every one knows that a
well grocmod horso is better than a
negloetod ono, with a shabby coat
Nearly the samo result has been found
when this treatment is applied to swine.
Lot evory manager lay down this rule,
that a hog pen should never ha distinguish'
ettbyiti odor Me feet distad. Tho
sleeping apartments should bo scparato,
and kept porfeetly clean and dry. Tho
fther portion should bo daily cleaned
out, and tho manure at onoo mixed with
muck, loam, coal ashes &o., to make
oompost and desti oy the odor, which is
i injurious to tho hoalth of swine to
breaths as it is to human beings. It is
not necessary that a piggory should cost
fivs hundred dollars hat it may bo kept
ir splendid ordori a cheap and simple
structure may be subjected to tho most
perfect system of cleanliness. The
satisfaction it will afford tho owner, the
comfort to the occupant, and tho profits
to tho purse, will be a three fold oompen
iation. Do everything In proper time.
