GRAFTING CARE OP TREES.
A the season lor grafting" is ap
pfoaohiug, it id about time for some one
to inquire whan is tit proper timo to
out scions? My answer to this question
would bo, all scions not readily procured
at the time of grafting should bo cut in
the winter, or any timo beforo the buds
'Start in the spring. Roason because
then you have leisure and can make a
better selection. All other scions should
be cut after tho buds begin to swell, or
as last as they are ncoded for grafting.
Reasons:
1st. There is considerable troublo and
risk attending the curing and keeping of
wititur-cut scions till they aro wanted
lor grafting.
2d. The old scions, by which I mean
those cut beforo tho buds swell, may 'bo
dead through tho inlltience of excessive
cold, or some mismanagement in their
curing- Cut tho new scions, or tlioso
cut nftor the buds are started, are alive,
for they haro commenced growing.
3d. Old suious, after insertion in tho
Stocks, must remain for a week or two,
and even thruo months in some cases,
before they begin to grow, during whfth
thnethoy aro exposed to sun, winds and
rain, and other casualties, whereas new
scions which have already begun to grow,
If proporly inserted, may be expected to
continue growing without much, if any,
intermission.
4th. New scions aro moro certain to
grow than old ones. An 'experienced
grafter, who has followed tho business
for twenty years or more, tells mo. ho
prefers now scions when ho has time to
cut them. It accords also with my own
experience?
Samo agricultuial editors say that
newly transplanted trees should have at
least ouo' season s growth before they are
grafted. On the contrary, 1 had better
success in grafting trees set out last spring
and the previous full, than old orchard
trees.
In grafting young trees I prefer to
graft tho limbs a half dozen or moro.
Some of them will must certainly grow,
the others eau be cut oil', lint if the
,body of the tree is cut oil' and grafted,
aud tho scion or scions perish, tho tree is
nearly ruined. Besides, a whole year or
more must ebipso before it can bo re
grafted. Cor. U. Y. Farm m' Ciub.

STRAWBERRY PLANTS GARDEN CUL
TURE. For extensive culture for market puis
poses, the hill cultuiu is undoubtedly
tho best, but to raiso for tainily uso in
gardens wo uiuth prufur beds. These
should be thoroughly spaded and enrich-,
ed' and niado four fee in width to ac
commodato three rows of plants, which
should bo set so as to leave a space of 18
inches each way. For each plant make
a hole five inches in diameter aud as
deep as tho length of the roots; in the
centre of this helo throw up a slight
cone-shaped elevation,, on the top of
which place the plant, leaving tho roots
to spread around ou all sides; then fill in
and press tho dirt firmly onto them,
loaving the crown uncovered, and far
enough abnvo tho ground to leavo it
slightly elevated when tho ground sct
tlos. A plant. sti(c!i in the ground mm
live, while ono properly cared for will
yield GO and 100 fold. When a plant is
well rooted it will throw off runners,
theso, after extending a suitable dislaiico
from the mother plan, send out roots
which, striking into tho soil, throw up a
tuft ot leavos, forming another plant,
wbicb becomes in like manner parent to
a new growtli, which in turn becomes a
compound multiple of (he parent stock,
If high winds displaco theso runners nnd
provont their taking root, a handful of
soil should be thrown upon them.
Flants set in spring or early tall will
gi?o offshoots which ny be transplanted
in October, and will bear moderately tho
next season; but moro vigorous plants
are obtained by setting in the spring nnd
giviug a season's growth beforo bearing.
Tho ground around bearing plants should
bo well covered with cloiwi mulch, to
proveut the starting of weeds and to
keep tlio fruit unsoiled; and all (he runs
ners must bo trimmed off to ensuro a
good crop of borries. It, on tho contrary)
in starting bods, tho utmost growth of
new plants is desired, no fruit should he
allowed to grow. Beforo the ground
Iroozes in tho tall, tho beds should bo
protected by a covering of straw or
muloh, which should not exceed two
inches in depth over the crowns, or they
will bo smbthored. Jiiiral American.
MANAGEMENT OF LAMBS.
Cuttino Tkktii. If a lamb appears
to suck with difficulty or reluolnnco' its
mouth should b3 examined, to seo
whofher the front teeth aro through tho
gums. If not,'and tho gums' are inflam
ed and tender, thoy should bo opened
over tho tooth with a sharp knife.
Swelled Nkok When lambs aro
born with the glands of the neck enlarg
ed, a atrip of woolon cloth should bo
bound around the neck and wet a few
timet a day with a strong solution of
camphor. If this ii not touud effective,
wet the cloth with alinoture f iodine.
