uce 10 an nouiKiunl return iiv
arrest. Soils of modornta nu iness will
feed growing plants tar bettor than
tronger land, ii thq former bo bromrht
to B proper mechanical condition by lino
comminution of tlie soil, and the lutter
bat imperfectly tilled. . ...
The soil sorves as a medium fof fixing
tbe plant, and thrgiigh. which' it receives
lU pabulum,' or plant lood In order
that the rootlota which seek out and take
up this food may spread through the soil
to the best advantage, it is necessary to
t hve it in such condition that it mav be
easily penetrated. 15y thorough deep
, working this eud is attained j it also ad-
mits air more readily, which h ono of
the essentials in vegetation; moistute is
v more equally dis1 limited, and retained
, where necessary; warmth, so essertial to
vegetable growth, is also admitted and
retained, so that At every step the roots
of all kinds f plants find nourishment.
By adding fertilizing material it is dis
tributed throughout the soil, and readily
appropriated by tho growing plants, as
Well rs assisting to keep the soil in proper
trolifinir"l condition. Tho very best
excoutiexfof the process of plowing only
iitial!y supplies the ttost favorable con
dittos far growth. Tho toil should bo
as thoroughly pulverized, aud the
nr.nure rs finely distributed through it as
r;:.'iblo, in order to obtain best results.
Gocl plowing ontinot ba done on any
lind while rct, rnd especially day.
The furrow slice may roll smoothly as
froaiabriolc mould but upon drying it
Trill bo compacted into lumps which no
harrowing will properly reduce. Th::
arao if true to a greater or less extont
with other toils. Good plowing depends
measurably upon the excellence of the
irtplc.r.outs used, ' as well as upon the
plowman; the latfcr being of greater im
portance, for a ponr plowman will often
make bad vork with a good implement,
whereas a good plowman will make lair
troik with nn ordinary implcmont; the
latter strikes a straight furrow, leaves it
clean behind him, ,1'roo from baulks, of
uniform depth and width, tho furrow
slices being narrow, to break the soil as
Cno. as possible, as the great ohject o
plowing Dhould be to fit n good seed
bod. Tho poor workman is tho rcvorso
Of this, leaving his land but illy prepared
to lupply the requirements of a vigorous
growth.
The art of a good plowman must bo
learned at the plow handle, and will
require thought nnd ingenuity, c well as
Irength and agility. No wrijien instruct
tioa will expbiu how good plowing can
be done so that a uovico may hi, onoo
bcoomo muster of tho art New England
Farmer.
ANEW HOUSE fcMOS
A Paris blacksmith hss invented a
new system of shoeing horsea. Instead
of the shoe being placed on iho hoof and
buminjj its own resting place, the o'ulsido
rf the hoof is cut uway around the foot
to the depth of half an inch this leaves a
ledge into' which tho shoe tits, and it is
then flush with the frog, which just
tonohffl tho ground, instead of being
raised, as of old, by the shoe. The
advantages of this are that the foot is
little pared, nnd thai instead of a heavy
shoe the nuim:;l is shod in what are littlo
mere than racing plates. The advan
tages claim by tho inventor are, that the
horse never slips, that the shoe allows
the foot to expand naturally, and that it
lists as long and is as cheap as the old
plan of shoeing.
GROWING SEED GRAIN.
What might not be done if the same
kill and peisevcranoo Was given to rain,
log seod grain which the horticulturist i
bestows upon fruit f Farmers talk a
great deal of importing seed, of changing
it but none think of growing it, Now,
here is au idea worth a fortune to any
young farmer. Let him study whut may
be called the habits of wheat, and com
mence growing from carefully selected
crams, taking the largest and most
perfeot, carefully removing from tho
plants nil weakly and imperfect ears and
shoots, and in n few seasons ho will have
a quality of seed nativo and odaptod to
the climate superior to any that can bo
imported. selected.
EARLY MILKING.
Cows should be milked carlv in the
morning, so that I hey can feed on the
dewy grass. Two hours of suuh feed is
worth as much as that of tho lost of tho
day towards getting n goad flow of milk.
So wake up, boys, at father's rap on tho
partition wall, nnd hurry to tlio yard
with pail in hind, and have the cows in
the pasture beforo anybody's elso. Do
lure and milk clean. A boy who will
always milk clean will have n good
reoommendiirion for being faithful,
wherever he goos, and suuh reeommun
dation always goes n great way among
business mea. Maine Farmer.
BLEACHING BROOM CORN.
A broom maker writes to tho Scion ti
fio American that broom oorn is bloachod
by exposing it to the fumes of burning
ulphur. A largo box is provided, in
tbe bottom of whioh a pot ot brimstone
isplaoed. Tho corn Is thou wet nnd
hung up over it so as to expose a largo
urfaoo, and the whole is covered with a
pieoe of old carpet, to confine the vapor
and allow it to escape slowly.
