    - FAR MESS' COLUMN.
" ' ABOUT FRUIT TREES.
We have received from a correspon.
'. dant at Jay, B.," also ono from
Jefferson, "A Subscriber," letters of
inquiry in regard to fruit trees, but with
the present crowded stale ol our columns
it is impossible for us to print tlicm In
full. We trust what follows will givo
' each tho information ho requests, but
moanwhilo invito from our correspon.
dents anything from their own expert
enco or observation touching tho mat
ters embraced in the queries.
1. The fall is considered tho best timo
to sot out applo trees, but if neglected
last fall, do not let tho spring pans willi-
, out performing the job.
2. Pruning requires a wholo column
rather thou tho lino or two wo can give
; it. Tho oporation is performed both in
the winter and summer, according to
circumstances. Winter pruning should
be performed with as littlo injury ns
. possiblr 10 tho bark, using sharp tools
And covering nil wounds with paint,
grafting wax or shellao dissolved in nloo
holi Summer pruning is dono mainly
to prevent an undue or unsightly growth
n any one pare oi mo woo or piaui, or
(o check its luxurianco and induce frui
ttn. Tf tin ,lr,,,n fnm'nit n1 unn i firm
by simply nipping tho young shoots with
tho thumb and finger, or cutting them
' with a pocket knifo.
3. Tho dead bark, moss, &o., from
' tho bodios and largo limbs of trees can
bo soraped oil' to good advantage.
Soap suds, not very strong, is a good
wash, as it is beneficial to tho true and
destroys iusccts which cling to the
bark.-
4. Fruit trees are gross feeders mid
should bo given a' liberal supply of
manure. Let it bo well foiked in around
the tree, and al-o applied to tho surface,
spreading it on tho ground as far linn
the trees as the roots extend.
5. Wo would recommend tho follow
ing list of winter fruii for our JclFersou
subscribers, vix: lihodo Island Greening,
Baldwin, llubliardston Nonsuch. Jowiti's
Red, Bellflower, Hoxbury llusset, Minis-,
ter, American Golden Russet, Northern
Spy, Ribston Pippin, Pino Permain,
Blaok Oxford, Spitzenburg fiom which
he can make a selection.
6. Wo would reccommoiid grading
into the limbs oi tho tree,- taking caro to
have the top formed even and symme
trical. 7. Both our querists, and all others
interested in fruit culture, should study
Mr. Qoodale's report on tho Agriculture
ofMaino for 18CI, nr.d Barry's Fruit
Garden. Tho latter work can bo obtain
ed of A. Williams & Co., Boston.
Maine Farmer.
MANAGEMENT OF COLTS.
As much doponds upon tho proper
management ofacoltto insure a good
and gcntlo horse, a few suggestions
from ono who ha3 had soino experience
in the matter may not ho out ot plneo.
Every farmer who is eng.igod in rear
ing young horses, should commence
early to handlo them; and for this pur
pose, a halter of tho proper size should
be prooured, so that tho colt may be
taught a very important lesson, while it
is young, iu being trained to tho halter.
. It is unwiso to sulT.r tho colt to run
until it is threo 'or four years old beloro
it is taught oveu tho first lessons.
When it bocomos necessary to work
the dam, especially when plowing, tho
Cvlt should be haltered, and tied whero
.it will bo convenient tolooeo it and let
it suck, say threo or four times during
tho day. By this mpans; the colt will
not bo in danger of being crippled by
running into tho gearing, as is oftou tho
case when it runs at will.
Too much pains can not bo taken to
provido good and comfortablo quartet's
for yon? colts, as. much depends upon
this, as well as tho kind and quantity oi
feed given them j for if these nro suffered
to run about during tho winter, exposed
to all tho chilling wiuds and storms, as
tho manner of somo is, they will certain'
ly fail to mako as good animals ns they
would hnvo been under a bettor treat
ment. Then, for tho sake of economy,
see that your colts, as well asolherstoek,
are provided with good quarters'
I will now state my method of break
ing" young horses to work, which I havo
found to bo successful with but very littlo
labor and vexation) but my success, pro
bably, doponds moro upon their manage
ment while young, in training; them to
tho halter, and otherwise milking them
gcntlo, than upon tho method itself.
First, aftor gontly placing tho harness
upon tho colt, it should bo led nbout by
the harness, in order to accustom, it to
the harness, thon buckle on to the bit a
good pair of linos, and drive it about for
an hour or so, to teach it tho uso of the
bit, whdn it may bo hitohod to the
iragdn, with which it may bo tuught
the work it is now to pe rforui. .

which finally changes toabuotlo. Soul
