The following from a Washington let
ter to the Philadelphia limes is compli
mentary to Senator Cameron's interest
In his constituents if not to 1 ' : methods
of accomplishing ends:
The arrangement of the committees of
the House shows that Mr. Keifer honestly
endeavored to carry out his part of the
bargain. He delivered to the State of
Pennsylvania seven chair r nships and,
what is worth to that State more than
all that was left, the practical control of
the committee of ways and means.
While we are decrying bossism, let us
accord it whatever virtue it possesses. It
is possible I may overrate the importance
of these results, but I must give to Mr.
J. Donald Cameron the credit of having
the nerve and influence to carry out the
plain suggestion which has given the
State of Pennsylvania a standing in the
House of Representatives never before
accorded her, even under a Speaker
chosen from her own Commonwealth.
What would she have had under Mr.
Kassou or under Mr. Iliscock? Perhaps
the same thing under the same "circum
stances; but the circumstances which
made Keifer Speaker could never have
been brought to bear on the other two.
Kassou would never have appealed to the
President and could have given nothing
in return. The Ti 'sjdent could not have
bought Kassou. lie would not have pur
chased Iliscock. Keifer was the only avail
able Stalwart material, and the keen sense
of his iltuess for the work expected of him
gave the administration a solid basis
whreon to operate. Keifer is a square
man and has faithfully undertaken to ful
fill his contract.
A Washington special says a gentleman
who is very near to the President, and
who has had an interview with him since
he arrived in New York, says that Gener
al Artthur has decided to appoint ex-
Senator Sargeant, of California, Secre
tary of the Interior, and William E,
Chandler ,of New Hampshire, Secretary
of the Navy. Nothing is likely to
prevent the appointment of Sargeant;
and Chandler, lie says, will certainly be
nominated unless General Grant shall
desire to actively interfere and make a
personal appeal to the President against
him. This, it is thought, General Grant
may do. The other Stalwart friends of the
President, Colliding and Piatt, are report
ed to be satisfied with the nomination of
Chandler. So it seems tliet the leading
Stalwarts, with one exception, have
graciously consented that the President
shall put a friend of Blaine in the Cabi
net as the representative of New England.
It is averted that General Grant too h:;s
very anxious that ex-Senator Choffee, of
Colorado, should be made Secretary of
the Interior. But the trans-Mississippi
country could not agree upon Mr. Choffee
as the representative of' that region.
The Post's Washington special says
the Senators expect the taiill' discussion
will become general in both Houses soon
after Congress re-assembles. Beck is
preparing a speech. He expects to pre
sent some startling facts which he ob
tained during his visit to Atlanta and
thinks he will be able to show that the
cotton manufacturing industry of the
South not only needs no protection, but
also that New England will need far
more to be protected against Georgia
than against fo.eign competition. Kelly
thinks revision might be a good thing as
to a few articles, but decidedly opposes a
wholesale reduction of the tariff.
It seems to be generally conceded that
Gen. Beaver is to be the Republican can
didate for Governor. He ought to be
unobjectionable to every earnest Repub
lican. We suggest as an equally avail
able candidate for Lt. Governor Senator
Davies of this county. They would make
a strong team in every particular, and
would be triumphantly elected. No one
will complain of a leadership that gives
the party such candidates.
Some of the independent Republican
papers of the State are llnding fault with
the "committee" that recently met in the
Girard House for not naming a candidate
for governor. The failure to do this it
appears to us is the best evidence of
their wisdom. The address which the
committee put forth urges the voters to
attend the primaries and express their
wishes. The pulling forward of candi
dates by cliques is just what they are
finding fault about.
The holiday trade in New Yore is re
ported to have been the greatest ever
known. Hotels, stores and streets have
been full of people, and, money has
seemed to be plenty. Certainly greater
attractions in the way of holiday gifts to
suit the circumstances and purses of all,
were never before offered, and the busi
ness done in them is a sure indication of
general prosperity.
