The County Commissioners have been sued
by a colored man at Canton because they
"scaled" an exorbitant bill for outside relief
for a pauper.
The clerk of the Brockton House, Brock
ton, Mass., Mr. Alfred S. Backus, writes that
lie was almost immediately cured by St. .Ja
cobs Oil, of a severe ease of rheumatism.
On the first of January the post office will
be moved into the north store of Mercur
block. The room is being fitted up and in
many respects the new location will be much
more convenient for both the. postmaster and
the public.

Institute on Monday evening.
We have received and read with much in
terest a tract entitled •• A plain Review of the
Rev. Dr. LITTLE DALE'S Tract on Real Pres
ence." The "Review" is from the trenchant
pen of U"V. B. J. DOUGLASS, formerly Roc
tor of Christ Church in this place. It very
clearly refutes the un-Protestaut doctrine
held liy,a portion of the Episcopal church,
and is worthy a wide circulation. We thank
the author for writing it.
The ALFRED J. KNlGM rcntertainment ad

FAMILY GATHERING.— Mr. JESSE BROWN
of Sheshequin has invited lii> five brothers
and two sisters to visit'him 011 Tuesday, Jan
uary 3. We hope they may all be able to be
there, as they are all aged people and will
probably never have another opportunity of
meeting together in this life. The arrange
ments are being made by Mr. CHAIIT.ES I.
BROWN and will include a sumptuous dinner.
The parties are expected to remain over the
night and the invitations include husbands
and wives. Mr. BROWN is nearly ninety, and
though somewhat infirm physically, enjoys
vigorous mental faculties.

CHARLES RANDOLPH for the murder of
CHARLES BUTTON, on July 23d. 011 the
Paine road between Wyalusing and Dusli re.
He also had in custody FRED. WATTLE/'
GEORGE DYER and FRANK GIBUS, also said
to be implicated. The bearing was held be
fore Justice WILLLSTON. who last evening
discharged all the censed, the testimony ex
onerating them from any blame for the kill
ing of BUTTON, whom it was shown was the
party at fault. The action was brought by
tho father of the d cea-ed, who claimed that
he could produce evidence sufficient to prove

TOWANDA RIFLE RANGE.— The silver dol
lar match, Monday, Dee. 20. was largely pat
ronized. notwithstanding the rain and mist;
the mist, however, was most troublesome,
and few of the men escaped tho magpie,
though the general practice, weathf 1 consid
ered, was looked upon as most satisfactory.
Four of the competitors shot close and steady
—EDSON and M,PHEROX making a close
tight for the honors. As it was left for the
last shot to decide the victory. On the las'
round EDSON hold one point of vantage, and
the men were all anxious. The round closed
for seven centres; EDSON was the vicior
witbjustone point to spare. The scores of

A SAD OCCURRENCE —On Saturday even
ing last, as LYMAN B. SPEAKER and family
consisting of liis mother, wife, a son about 14
years of age. a child of 5 years and a hired
girl, were returning from the church where
Christmas eve services had been held in con
nection with a Christmas tree, in crossing
the Loval Sock creek, the boat capsized from
some cause and the entire party wore thrown
into the creek, which at Ibis point is quite deep
and the current rapid. Owing to the exertions
of the partv Mrs. SARAH SPEAKER. Air.
SPEAKER and the hired girl wore saved, hut
Mrs. SPEAKER and the two children were
drowned. The bodies of the children were
found soon after, near where the accident oc
curred, but the body of Airs. SPEAKER was
not found until Sunday afternoon, and was
some distance down five creek.
Mas.'SPEAKER was a woman of rare
acennipllchments. hospitable, entertaining
and always interested in the welfare of those
near her. JOHN, the eldest, child, we remem
ber as a bright, intelligent studious school
bov, who carried with him an air of manliness
seldom met with in a boy of his age. This
blow falls'with great severity upon the kind
husband and father who is thus bereft in a
single hour of an estimable wife and two
dear children. The heartfelt sympathy of
all is extended to him in this hour of afflic
