Mr. O. A. BALDWIN, of Towanda, was in
Waverly yesterday, registered at the hotel

Adjutant MOORE, 9th Reg., of Wilkesßar
was in town yesterday consulting Captain
WILT in regard to military matters.
JESSEE SPALDING, formerly of Athens,
this county, has been appointed by the Presi
dent Collector of Customs at Chicago.

while hunting in Sullivan county is impro

Miss IIi LA XOELF.S of East Towauda, who
is attending boarding seliool in Canandaigua,
X. Y.. is spending the holidays with her
parents.
Rev. G. D. STROUD came up from Tunk
hannoek yesterday to otlleiate at the funeral
of Mrs. JOSEPH JONKS. The old lady was
<3-k years old.
Superintendent LYON paid out $20,000 in
gold to the mit ers this month and the men
now amuse theinselvss pitching quoits with
twenty dollar gold pieces.
Mrs, G. 11. WELI.ES and daughter, of Wy.
alusing were in town yesterday purchasing
articles for a public Christmas tree to be
erected in one of the churches of that
town.
AARON CLAUSON, a typo who took GREE
LY's advice and went West, after serving
his time as an apprentice in this piaee, made
us a call yesterday. For the past twelve
years he has been in Colorado, California,
Oregon and Nevada. lie v isits Towanda to
see his aged parents.
We can guess what a certain young lady
not far from State street, will find in her
stocking Christmas morning, hut we're 'not
going to give old Santa Chilis away. We
hope she's not the only BELLE intowiftobe
so handsomely remembered, though such ar
ticles do not grow on bushes.

while crossing the bridge, Wednesday night,
about J) o'clock. and when about two thirds
of the way over was attacked by some per
son and dealt a powerful blow on the head.
It was evidently a ease of highway robbery.
The bridge was not lighted. The
Commissioners should see that the bridge is
properly lighted these dark nights.

gineer of the Fire Department for the com
ing year. Mr. COOI.BAUGII who is now run

road, has been connected with the lire depart
ment of Towifnda, since his boyhood, and on
account of his good record as a fireman, an I
his many genial and social qualities has won
the friendship of every one. The firemen of

Towanda are to be congratulated upon the
selection of a gentleman of the character
and worth of Mr. COOLBAUGII as their chief

The scholars of the M. E. Sunday School
are to enjoy a feast in the church parlors to

in Tioga county, this State, in honor of the

Sunday School Christmas exercises will in
| elude both a tree and a feast. The celebra
tion will be observed Monday afternoon.

CARTER LEE, a young colored man died at
1 2 o'clock yesterday morning. CARTER was
I the only colored printer in this section. lie
| was a young man of exemplary habits and
highly esteemed by all who knew him. The
funeral will take place from the colored
church this afternoon. Friends will meet at
his father's house at 2 o'clock. The deceased
was 18 years old.
The President will not for the present
encourage anything like public society
events in Washington, believing that a
proper time should elapse after the death
of his predecessor before anything o*

Judge Riddle proposes to put a stop to
election frauds in Philadelphia. lie has
just sentenced Mount, charged with tam
pering with returns, to 2 years in prison
and a -sIOOO fine.
SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY.—The
Sunday School of the Church of the Messiah
Rev. Dr. TAYLOR, Pastor, will celebrate the
Christmas Anniversary in the church audito
rium. on Saturday evening (Christmas Eve.)
at 7 o'clock. The formation of mottoes, re
citations, singing, and Christmas gifts, will j
make up the pragramme. The public are cor- 1
