'•ltai/y tireine" only 25 rni/* per month, fry it, 'l'lie fiftieth anniversary of Bishop Howe's ordination to the ministry will occur the 18th of January. At tin- late annual convention of the Central Penn sylvania diocese, it was resolved to cele brate this event in Reading, the Bishop's residence, with appropriate services and the presentation to the Bishop of a hand some pastoral stall". Bishop Clark of Rhode Island, has accepted an invitation to preach tin? anniversary sermon, and Bishop Stevens of Philadelphia, will be the celebrant of the Holy Communion. At the conclusion of these services the visiting clergy and laity will be enter tained on behalf of the members of Christ Church at a dinner. The celebration will conclude with a reception at tin; Bishop's house in the evening. Bishop Howe is a native of Bristol, Rhode Island and was formerly and for many years rec tor of St. Luke's Church, Philadelphia. Upon the division of the old diocese of Pennsvlvauia he was elected the llrst Bishop of this diocese at a convention held in Harrisburg in the fall of 1870, and was consecrated to the episcopate in the early part of 1871. He is now in the 71th year of his age and still in vigorous health, giving his constant and active at tention t> the alfiirs of his diocese, which in territorial extent is one of the largest within the communion of the Episcopal Church in the United States. The following call has been issued by Chairman McKee, of the committee which conducted the Wolfe campaign last fall: HEADQUARTERS STATIC COMMITTEE, CITIZENS' REPUBLICAN ASSOCIATION, GI KAHD HOUSE,PHILADELPHIA,Dec. Id, 1881. To the Independent Republicans ol'Penn sylvania : on are earnestly requested to send representatives from each county to a State conference to be held at Philadel phia, Thursday, January 12, 1882, at Id o'clock A. M., to take into consideration the wisdom of placing in nomination proper persons for the offices of Govern or, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of Internal Affairs and Supreme Court Judge and such other matters as may come be fore the conference looking to the over throw of "boss rule" and the elimination of the pernicious "spoils system" and its kindred evils from the administration of public affairs. It is of the utmost im portance that those lifty thousand un shackled voters who supported the inde pendent candidacy of lion. Charles S. Wolfe for the otlice of State Treasurer as a solemn protest against ring domina tion, together with the scores of thou sands ot liberty-loving citizens who are ready to join in tne next revolt against "bossism," shall be worthily represented at this conference. I.J). MCKKE, FRANK WILLING LEACH, Ch'ni'n Sec'y. The Buffalo Courier says that early in the Guiteau trial it expressed the opinion that whatever was the cause of Judge Cox's apparent leniency to Guiteau, whether weakness or policy, the result would be good. "Already," says the Courier , "it is clear that the prisoner is fulfilling the old adage, 'Give him rope enough and he will hang himself.' The lev elation ol his character made on the trial has done more to further the cause of justice than the testimony of all the witnesses called for the prosecution. It now appears that Judge Cox has been acting under advice in this matter. One of the Washington papers says that he consulted with his five associates on the district court bench and followed the course marked out by them. Justice Field of the supreme court, who has been spending the season abroad, was very much perplexed to account for Judge Cox's course. Since his return and con sultation with Chief Justice Cartter of I the district court he expresses himself j satisfied with the manner in which the ! case is conducted." Senator Jones, of Nevada, is not in sympathy with the President's financial ideas. Speaking of the sentiment of t lie j j people of his State, he says: "111 com ; moil with the entire West, our people I are opposed to what is called tinkering, the currency.
