The Rival Faction.
The opposition faction to the reigning
leaders of the Republican party is now
fully organized. Of the gentlemen who
are to take the leaiMn the fight to sup
plant Cameron, Quay A Co., the
says:
Senator J. W. Lee, who was chairman
of the recent State Conference of Repub
licans, designed to promote Popular Rule
and Free Representation within the Re
publican party, aud who was directed to
appoint the Executive Committee, au
thorizes the announcement that he has
appointed the gentlemen named below.
In addition, the Conference itself passed
a resolution designating Seuator Lee as a
member, so that the whole Committee is
constituted as follows :

This selection will be recognized as
eminently strong aud judicious. It com
bines fair geographical distribution, high
representative character, earnest Repub
licanism, aggressive reform purposes
aud practical political and organizing tal
ent. It embraces men whose faithful
and disinterested devotiou to Republican
principles will stand unchallenged
throughout the State, aud who embody
aud represent the popular demand for
the honest rule of an honest majority.
Ths Republicans who are engaged in this
popular movement —for its whole
strength lies in a direct appeal to the
people— believe that they are rendering
the highest aud best service to the lie
publican party in seeking to make it fully
responsive to the popular will, and the
members of the Committee stand as good
types of this purpose.
Senator John Stewart is one of the
ablest and bravest champions of the best
lieyublicau sentiment. In the Legisla
ture he was a leader of leaders, and
among the people lie is the conspicuous
representative of liberal, progressive,
true R publicanism. His clear head,
broad views, honest purpose and great
capacity are a tower of strength to any
eause. Mr. Geist is the fearless Editor of
the Lancaster New Era , who lias fought
through many years for better politics.
The selections for Philadelphia are ad
mirable. The political standing and the
higlrreprcsentative character of Colonel
William McMichael are as universally
recognized as his fine intellectual gifts
and his great personal worth. He brings
to the cause of popular rule an honored
name, a wide acquaintance, life-loug Re
puolicanlsm and brilliant abilities. Sam
uel W. Feunypacker has been devoted for
years to the principles of better govern
ment, and is a gentleman of deep convic
tions, rare accomplishments, and clear,
incisive, comprehensive thought.
The reniaiuing names from the State
arc equally well chosen. Senator Da
vies was the representative and embodi
ment of public sentiment in the canvass
preliminary to the recent State Conven
tion. He is a cool, judicious, forceful
man, whose counsels and cooperation
will be of great service. Mr. Phillips was
one of the conspicuous supporters of Mr.
Wolfe iu the last campaign—a widely
known and respected representative of
the oil region—and his designation signi
fies that the Republicans who voted for
Mr. Wolfe as a protest against party
abuses are not to be treated as having by
that act put themselves outside the pale
of the party, but are welcome to act as
Republicans for Republican reform with
in the Republican organization. Mr.
Fleming was formerly Sheriff of Alleghe
ny County and is a gentleman of large
political capacity and experience. What
is still more importaut, he has behind
him in this movement and pledged to
his support, as we are able to say, the
real moral, intellectual, financial and bus
iness strength of Al'egheny. Of Senator
L'*e, himself, who, against his wishes
for a more retired position, has been put
at the front in this movement, we need
only i-ay that lie is one of the purest,
most disinterested and high-minded
among all tne Republican leaders.
One of the first duties of this Execu
tive Committee will be to designate the
General Committee of 251, corresponding
with the number of the senators and rep
resentatives from the several districts,
who will initiate the work of organiza
tion. And then will come the appeal to
tne people.
Pennsylvania is now making sewing
machines to be sent to China.
An earthquake occurred at Agram,
Austria, oil Wednesday, and was the se
verest since the catastrophe of 1880.
The finances of Kentucky are not in a
bad state. She has of outstanding bonds
$180,394, and resources $708,138,27.
An extra police force is again stationed
in Downing street to protect Mr Glad
stone's residence during his temporary
sojourn there.
Senator Anthony sent every member
of the United States Senate, as well as
every living ex-member of that body, a

The Railwaymen's Mutual Aid Associa
tions of Chicago nas increased its initia
tion fee to five dollars and limited the
amount of insurance to $2,500.

who went to Easton a short time since
and entered a house of ill-fame there,
has become a raving maniac.
The Supreme Court of Indiana, in in
terpreting the Sunday law, has held that
an innkeeper may not legally sell a cigar
to a guest on Sunday for the reason that
a cigar is not a necessity to the most in
veterate smoker.
A marble tablet has been placed in the
ladies waiting room of the Baltimore &
Potomac depot in Washington to mark
the spot where Garfield was shot. The
inscription is, "James Abram Garfield,
President of the United States, July 2nd,
1881."
