PROSPECTIOUS. —"Of making many books
there is no end," and the multiplication of
newspapers is the popular source of educa
ting the people. We arc aware that the idea
is quite preyolent that Bradford County has
too many papers, but with the large number
not one is wholy devoted to the interest of
the great producing class —the agricultural
ists—and at the urgent solicitation of sonic of
the best practical farmers in the county, we
have decided to commence about the tirst of
the new year, a local agricultural weekly,
especialy adapted to the wants of the farmers
of this section. The contributors to the
paper will embrace the best practical farmers
in the county, and wc shall aim to make it
of real value to every tiller of the soil, dairy
man and stock raiser in the county, by giv
ing the results of experiments by those in
whom the claases interested have confidence,
and whose success in business is an evidence
of thorough practical knowledge.
The paper will contain a condensation of
the general news and the fullest local notes.
Fuller particulars hereafter.
LAMOREUX'B dancing classes to-night.
Mrs. MINGOS not only has the most attrac
tive display of millinery goods to lie found
any where, but her show windows are very
artistically arranged. It is difficult for any
lady of taste to pass without stopping to ad
mire the beautiful tilings to be seen, and we
confess to a weakness in the same direction.
We saw yesterday at BUUCAILL Brothers
a very neat monument to he placed over the
grave of Mrs. JOHN BEAMAN. The material
is mottle-green, carved into a neat design.
The inscription reads: "Margaret, wife of
JOHN BKAMAN, born March 5,1839, died May
2(5, 1880.
"A faithful wife,
A friend most dear,
A tender mother, lieth here."
Aunt HANNAH CRAMMER, an old lady re
siding in a small house near the Graded
School complains that she is greatly annoyed
by the scholars, who treat her very rudely,
Aunt HANNAH is finite aged and infirm and
never molests any one. We hope Principal
ALBERT or the directors will see that she has
no further cause of conplaint from that
source.
The llfth annual convention of the New
York State Dairyman's Association will be
held at Whitney's Point. December 20, 21 and
22.
The usual reduction of railroad fare will he
made to those attending the Convention, viz:
New York, Lake Erie and Western' Railroad,
the New York, Ontario and Western railway
and the Syracuse, and Binghamton Railroad.
Persons taking the New York. Lake Erie &
Western railroad will purchase tickets to
Binghamton, then take the Binghamton and
Syracuse road to Whitney's Point. Whit
ney's Point is on the line of the Syracuse and
Binghamton railroad.
First-class hotel accommodations for SI,OO
per day have been arranged for all who at
tend.
THE CHRISTMAS (DECEMBER) ST. NICII
LAS. —This year's Christmas "St. Nicholas"
is the finest number of that Magazine ever
issued: and therefore, probaly, it is also the
finest number of a children's magazine ever
printed. Its ninety odd pages full of fine il
lustrations make it a delightful Christinas
present for a boy or girl.
It opens with a superb frontispiece, en
graved by T. Cole, after a painting by the fa
tuous Spanish painter Zamaeois, and which
here figures as one of the illustrations of an
article about court-jesters in the olden time.
The number contains t lie opening cnapters
of two new serial 'stories:—"Donald and
Dorotliv," by Mary Mapes Dodge, the edi
tor ot the magazine;—and the Iloozier
School-boy," by Edward Eggicston, author
of "The Iloozier School-master." In it ap
pears, also, the beginning of a series of
"Stories from the Northern Myths," illustra
ted with a striking picture by Robert Blum: |
and it includes the second installment of
"Recollections of a Drummer boy," in which
are narrated some actual exciting experien
ces of the author when serving in the Nor
thern army during the civil war —and espe
cially how his regiment "got a shelling."
There is a long poem by Eva L. Ogden, en
grossed and illustrated by Alfred Brennan in
full-page form, after the style of the now
celebrated "Miller of Dee," by the same con
tributors.
Mrs. Clara Erskine Clement's admirable
"Stories of Art and Artists" are continued in
a paper upon Raphe], splendidly illustrated
with reproductions of his portrait of himself,
his Sistine Madonna, and the Madonna della
Sedia.
Of the contents relating especially to the
holiday season, the most striking are: Some
entertaining glimpses of life and manners in
the United States "A Hundred Years Ago,"
with several pictures by Robert Blum and
Alfred Brennan: the first half of a charac
teristic "fairy" story.—"The Boor Count's
Chr'stmas," —bv Frank R. Stockton: Wash
ington Gladdin's story of one happy Christ
mas-day, entitled "An Angel in an Ulster";
and the conclusion of "The Magic Pen," an
operetta of which the first part was printed
in the November number, and winch is by
E. S. Brooks, author of the successful "Land
of Nod" operetta of last Christmas.
The pictures, stories, poems, and lively
pieces in this beautiful number vviil, of
course, interest the boys and girls; and at
least thirteen hundred members of the Agas
si/ Association will enjoy reading Mr. Bal
lard's ninth report concerning that vigorous
societv, and its delightful, self-imposed stu
dies of Nature; nd the ".Tack-in tiic-Pnipit,"
"Letter-box," and 'Riddle-box" pages will
have devoted read"r>; hut that, one thing in
tins number which is most likely to rivet the
attention of the young folk is "Deacon
Green's Offer" of on" hundred brand-new
one dollar bills to the one hundred hoys and
girls who best, shall do a certain pleasant
piece of work for him.
