A pathetic scene occurred a few days
ago in the penitentiary at Little Rock,
Ark. A young man, twenty-three years
old, one of the train robbers recently sen
tenced to seventy years imprisonment,
complained of being ill, and was sent to
the hospital. He appeared to be suffering
from no disease, but his pulse was up to
140. His heart seemed to be breaking on
account of the severity of his sentence.
Tears fell from his eyes as he thought of
the long years of imprisonment before
him. His mind began to wander and in
his ravings he quoted sentences from
the pernicious literature which had led
him into his life of lawlessness. " Seiz
ing the bridle rein," cried the sufferer,
"he sprang upon his antagonist's horse
and dashed away. 4 Halt!' he exclaimed,
drawing a revolver and leveling it at the
head of young Horace." 44 Slowly and
sadly," he continued in a subdued voice,
" they left the church, and walked along
the well worn path to the rude grave of
Lawrence. Standing near the stone,
placed there by the Indian, Casper and his
fair companion " —here his mutterings lie
came inaudible and his voice died away in
a groan, Suddenly he raised himself,
looked intently toward the door, and sank
back dead, of a broken heart. It would
be superfluous to call attention to the
moral which this sad incident carries with
it.
The following letter from Charles
Kiugsley has just been published in the
London Spectator :
"You area sanguine man, my dear sir.
who ask me to solve for you the riddle of
existence, since the days of Job and Sol
oman, since the days of Socrates and
Buddha; the especial riddle, too, of our
time, with its increased knowledge of
physical science. But what I seem to
know 1 will tell you.
Knowing and believing a great deal of
the advanced physical science of Dar
win's school, I still can say 1 do not be
lieve in the exlatence of law. 'Laws < f
Nature,' 'Laws impressed,' or 'properties
impressed on Matter.' are to me, after
careful analysis of their meaning, mere
jargon. Nothing exists but WILL. All
physical laws ami phenomena are but tiie
manifestations of that Will, —one, order
ly, utterly wise, utterly benevolent. In
Him, 4 the Father,' I can trust, in spite of
the fact that my own prayers are not an
swered. I believe that he makes all
tilings work together for the good of the
human race, and of me, among the rest,
as long as I obey his will. I believe that
lie will answer my prayers, not according
to the letter, but according to the spirit
of it; that if I desire good, I shall find
good, though not the good 1 long for. And
'Law' and 'Necessity' I look upon as
phantoms of my own imagination, al
ways ready to reappear, but always cer
t .in, likewise, to vanish again, before
one sound blow of careful logic or of
practical life. Yours very truly.

Eoersley Rectory, Winch field, Dec. 23,

The ground is trembling under the Mis
sissippi Bourbons. The Fusion commit
tees are calmly talking of swearing in the
officials who were elected but counted out.
and, when they have once organized a
rival State Government, of appealing to
the President for recognition, which
means troops. What ever may
be thought of the propriety of
the proposed action, the obvious infer
ence seems to be that the Solid South is
breaking up and going to pieces very fast.
Is it true that Judge Cox, who is now
trying the assassin of President Garfield,
was himself counsel for Mrs. burratt, one
of the conspirators, convicted of plotting
the assassination of President Lincoln?
The present defend mt does certainly
seem to have everything his own way al
most as thoroughly as if the Judge were
still the counsel for llie assassin.— Tri
