Tlie JL>iiilv Review. Towanda, Pa., Tuesday, Nov. 22,1881. EDITORS. S. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N.ALVORD "iPuily Itevletv" on 585 cen pcr uioiitk. Try it! Cure for Dyphtheria. Syracuse, N. Y., Nov. 18,1881. EDITORS DAILY REVIEW During the past few weeks I have read of the ravages of diphtheria in one family at least in Towanda, also of other cases in and about your busy little town; also read an account of the "sul phur treatment" In the REVIEW. 1 wish in this letter to advance a few ideas as to the best mode of treatment employed by myself and other physicians in this city. Though we have no cases here now, we employed our plan most successfully last season. Make a fresh tincture of Phytolacca deeandria, or poke root, by maceration—ls drops in a half glass of water. Dose, a tes spoonful, alternately, with the same quanti ty of baptesia, or wild indigo, specific tinc ture, every hour, or two hours, according to the amount of redness or swelling of the tonsils or throat. Give these remedies from the insipieucy of the di>ease, and continue till the membrane has all disappeared, and no sign is left of its returning. In the ca tarihal form, with discharges from the nos trils, mix the baptesia and Phytolacca in one goblet, and alternate with bichromite of po tassa. Second decimal trituration, ten grains dissolved in the same amount of water as the tinctures, I most always mix the poke root tincture and wild Indigo, from the start, and alternate with the bichromite of potassa. If the air passages seem to be filling with mucus, 1 give the following decoction : Blood root pulverized, a teaspoonful, vine gar two or three table spoonfuls, white su gar a half tea cupful, boiling water half pint; boil for twenty minutes, stiring constantly: Dose, a tea spoonful every half hour, till re lief is obtained, which usually occurs in two or three hours. If the bronchial rattling re turns repeat the doses. The croupous complicature without the rattling is best met with Kali bichromic, nd spongia tosta (toasted sponge tincture), live drops in half glassful of water, alternated with the pota'ssa, a tea spoonful hourly. Quinino, in doses of two or four grains, ac cording to age of patient, should be giyen from jthe outset every t four oiq live hours, to be continued till the conyolescence is well established, and one dose per day, as long as the heart shows any signs of fag. Pork in thin slices should be kept bound over the outside of the throat, and up under the cars over the sides of the neck, throughout the pe riods of swelling and exudation. Do not apply any strong and irritating gargles, or swabs to the throat. J f any gar gle is used at all, take Tjldeti's Diphtbcriue* one teaspoonful, to a glassful of water, and allow a swallow lu rince the throat every hour or two through the day. Let the pa tients sleep as much as they will. Let the diet bo as nourishing as possible- Milk and good soup, and rare steak, of tender beef, if patient is old enough to demand meat. Haw oysters, or oyster soup can be given with benefit. Do not fear you will over feed or sustain a diphtheric patient. Any physicion who will follow the plan herein laid down will save nearly every patient he treats. If a child complains of being tired and fe verish and dull, when diphtheria is around, examine the throat at once and give a few doses of quinine and you may save a doctor's nil I and perhaps the life of a dear one. LADIES BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.—The Ladies Benevolent Association will meet on Wednesday afternoon, November 30th, at the usual place. The commencement of our winter's work has been delayed this year by an empty trea sury and lack of material for clothing. So it has been necessary to defer our meeting un til after the Thanksgiving collections, in order to ascertain whether the people of Towanda wish to continue this work of charity or not. During the ten years of its existence this society has been generously sustained and has done an amount of good that we cannot mea sure; but last spring our appeal for funds, was only responded to by owe donation than did not come from working members of the Association; and it is feared that a misappre hension exists in regard to the need of this organization since the opening of the County House. Indeed it lias been frequently re marked: "We will not need the Benevolent Society when we have the Poor House." But our object and work have not been to sup port paupers* only to render temporary as sistance to those who arc able and willing to support themselves—but who by sicknessT or other misfortune are placed in circumstances vvheic a little timelv aid lrom those more for tunate will alleviate their suffering, and give courage to some in a dark hour. I lie git titcst caic is always used in giving aid and rarely have our visitors been impos ed upon, and with such delicacy and tact lia\e out ladies worked, that sometimes eve the recipients have never known from what source the much needed help came. Surely the people of Towanda will never allow this good work to die for the lack of funds! "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Hoid; and that which he hath given will he pay him again."
