Mrs. 11. W. JONES of Towanda, Pa., and
Miss CARRIE IIANKINS, of Elmira, have
been spending a few days at the residence of
Mr. GEORGE SMITH, "Maplewood," Tioga,

We call special attention to the following
cure for one of the most fatal diseases to
which this climate is subject—diphtheria.
Don't fail to preserve it.
A correspondent of a Victoria paper says,
"Should any of your family be attacked with
diphtheria, do not be alarmed, as it is usual
ly speedily cured without a doctor.
When it was raging in England a few years
ago, I accompanied Dr. FIELD on his.round,
lo witness the so-called wonderful cures he
performed, while the patients of others drop
ped off on all sides. The remedy to be so
rapid must be simple. All he took with linn
was powdered sulphur and a quill, and with
these he cured every patient, without excep
tion. He put a teaspoonful of flour of brim,
stone into a wineglass of water, and mixed
it with his finger instead of a spoon, as the
sulphur does not readily amalgamate with
water. When the sulphur was well mixed
he gave it as a gargle, and ; n ten minutes the
patient was out of danger. Brimstone kills
every fungus in a man, beast and plant, in a
very few .lninutes. Instead of spitting out
the gargle he recommends the swallowing of
it. In extreme cases in which he had been
called just in the nick of time, when the fun
gus was too nearly closing to allow the gar
gling, he blew the sulphur through a quill
into the throat, and after the fungus had
shrunk to allow of it, then the gargling.
If the patient cannot gargle, take a live
coal, put it on a shovel and sprinkle a spoon
ful or two of the flour of brimstone at a
time on it; let the sufferer inhale it, holding
his head over it, and the fungus will die. If
plentifully used, the whole room may be fill
ed almost.to suffocation, and the patient may
he able to walk around in it. inhaling the
fumes, with the doors and windows closed
The mode of fumigatinga room with sulphur
has often cured most violent attacks of cohls
in the head, Hiest, etc., and is also recom
mended in cases of consumption and asth
ma."
