A WONDERFUL WATCH.—DAVID JONES
is a miner at the Pottsyilie shafts. lie owns
a watch wiiieli he prizes more than he did a
week ago. The other day it slipped out of his
pocket while at work in his breast, and went
down toe sehute with the coal. It was shov
eled into a wogon, and taken down a plane
136 yards long, arrived at the foot of the shaft
it was reloaded on the cage and taken up 16,-
000 feet to the surface. There it was turned
into the breaker, through which it passed
with several tons of coal. A state picker
found it. lu the meantime DAVY discovered
his loss and sent word to the top, and MARK
NAGLE, the telegraph operator made search
for it., arriving at the breaker just in time to
see a boy pick it up. On examination it was
found that besides being filled with coal dirt,
the damage the watch sustained was a bro
ken hand— Po'tsville Chronicle.
ALMOST A FlßE.— Express agent Agent W.
B. DODGE, did not go to church Sunday mor
ning, and just before noon, oil going into his
back yard, discovered a large volume of
smoke proceeding from the roof,of the house
adjoining ins residence, which is also owned
by him. He at once gave the alarm and pro
ceeded to investigate. The occupants of the
bouse were away, and lie was compelled to
break in a door. The house was full of
smoke, but Mr. D. reinforced by several of
his I eighbors, set vigorously at work and
soon had the fire extinguished. The fire had
kindled from ashes thrown carelessly against
the side of the house, and was burning be -
tween the inner and outer walls. The time
ly discovery saved a disastrous eonflagra
it'on.
