Ex-Sheriff" GRIFFIS leaves for Washington
this morning to be present at the opening of
the Senate °n Monday, as he is one of the of

RUFF started for Watsuiitown yesterday af
ternoon. They will make the journey with a
horse and buggy, and expected to reach Ea
porte last evening.
Ilev. C. T. IIALLOWF.LL lias gone to Phila
delphia to visit his parents. He will he ab
sent two or three weeks and attend the Gen
oral Convention of Baptist Churches in New
York before his return.
Among the passengers on the steamer Ohio,
which arrived in Philadelphia from Liver
pool Monday evening, were the Misses
BLIGHT of this place. Their father, Super
intendent BLIGHT of the S. E. <& 8. R. R..
met them in Philadelphia and escorted them
home.
FITCH has new chestnuts.
Fires and overcoats were comfortable yes
terday.
The " Manville " Organ, manufactured in
this place, is on exhibition at the Sullivan
county fair.
CHARLEY UAMSDKLL, of Elmira, will can
vas Towamla and vicinity for a new book en
titled Gen. GAUFIKLD'S Life.
As the pastor of the Baptist church will be
absent the next two Sundays there will he
no evening-service in that house. The pul
pit will be supplied both mornings.
The teachers and students at the Institute
' yesterday responded very generously to Prin
cipal QUIXLAN'S appeal for aid for the Michi
gan sufferers. The amount contributed was

Doctor RANDALL, of Forksville, Sullivan
county, died on Mondav. He formerly resi
ded in this county and was last year present
ed by the republicans of .Sullivan us theircun
didate for Congress.
People who take in the New York excur
sion next week will he afforded an opportu
nity of atteudiug the Yorktown'celebration
at a small additional expense, as tickets are

NEW Co At. YARD. —We were not aware
until a visit to the premises yesterday, of the
extensive improvements recently made at
what is known as the OVERTON basin, near
the Episcopal Church. A roadway lias besn
constructed west of the railroad track ami a
substantial bridge thrown across the entrance
to the basin, thus opening River street from
the Bridge to the freight depot. On the west
side of this road a large coal shed has been
erected extending nearlyj to the new Church
foundation, with sixteen bins, each of which
will hold fifty tons of coal. The yard is en
closed by a higii fence, and everything about
it done in the most convenient and substan
tial manner. The work has been prosecuted
under tho supervision of T. M. WOODRUFF.

Coal Co. The carpenter work wrs done by
JAMES K INSMAN and one hundred and sixty
thousand feet of lumber was consumed in
the building and fence. A neat office and a
set of Fairtiauk's scales stand at the entrance
to the yard, which is connected with the E.
V. R. R. by a "swi eh," so that coal will be
dumped from cars (directly into the bins.

the popular Eoval Sock, but, the best quality
of Piltston. Our old friend T. M. WOODRUFF
will have charge of the office and yard, which
will be sufficient guarantee to all who know
him that customers will he courteously treat

Rev. G. W. BETTER, of Ohio, will lecture
in Mereur Hall next Friday evening un
der the auspices of the Earn! Eeague. The
Reverend gentleman is a native of Ireland and
will discuss the Irish question from personal
observation.

Davis. The Judges awarded the Silver Med
al to the Davis, for the best double thread
sewing machine; first prize for the best plain
sewing; prize for the best fancy sewing;
first prize for the best silk embroidery.
Pomona Grunge, No. 23, P. of 11., composed of
Bradford and Sullivan counties, will hold its next
regular Quarterly meeting at the Hall of Spring
Hill Grange, No. ITS, on Thursday, November 3rd,
1881, at one o'clock, P. M. Those going by Rail
Road will leave at Wyalusing where conveyances
will be in waiting. A general attendance is reques
ted, as business of importance is to be transacted,
together with the election of officers for the ensuing
