Last week at the Pennsylvania State Fair
•uid Pittsburg Exposition,the following Sew
ng machines were on exhibition, viz: Whee
ler and Wilson,. Home, Singer, New Home,
White, Domestic, Wilson, Household and
Davis. The Judges awarded the Silver Med
al to the Davis, for the best double thread
sewing machine; first prize for the best plain
sewing; first prize for the best fancy sewing;
first prize for the best silk embroidery.
Crystal Lodge, No 57, Knights of Honor of
this place, have reduced their initiation fee
from SIO.OO to $5.00. This Lodge now has a
membership of over 90 members, composed
of our best citizens, and pays to the Widows
and Orphan's. Benefit Fund at each assess
ment over SIOO. It gives its members an in
surance of $2,000, which has cost on an aver
age, since the foundation of the order, $ll.OO
per year and pays a sick benefit of $8 per
week in case of sickness or disability. This
Order lias actually paid to Widows and Or
phans since 1878, the sum of $1,440,000. Eor

Soldier's Encampment.
At East Towanda, Tuesday, Weunesday and
Thursday j October 11.12 and 18, 1881.

The time is drawing near for the annual
encampment of the Grand Army and the sol
diers and sailors of this and adjoining coun
ties, it being October 11th, 12th and 18th.
The commander wishes to inform the
comrades that every effort on his part, is be
ing put forth to make it a success and he
wishes the co-operation of every soldier in
the county.
Unlooked for delays in making announce
ments have occurred and could not he avoi
ded. But at last wc have almost completed
arrangements for one of the best speakers in
the country, and many of the prominent gen
erals of the late war have been invited, and
it is believed from the favorable replies that
a large number of them wili be present.
Capt. Olmstead's Battery L., 7th division,
N. G. of N. Y., of Bingbamton, with fifty
men two pieces andji band of music, arc de
sirous of attending the encampment, and the
arrangements arc so far advanced that there
is hardly a doubt that they will be fully com
pleted, and the battery join us during the en
campment.
The Owego Zouaves have been invited and
will no doubt bo on hand.
The Franklin Guards, of Athens, are also
expected to attend.
Each Post in the county is making strong
efforts to turn out in large numbers and un
der good discipline.
It is now believed that this encampment
will be the largest gathering of the kind ever
eld in Towand a.
Full announcements will be given next
week. Let everybody prepare for a good
time.* •
