Our young townsman, JULIUS WAKDKLL, has accepted a situation in a large Elmira store. Having graduated at POWELL & CO.'S lie isfltted to till a clerkship in any store. The party given by DENXIE MONTANYK Saturday evening was a very pleasant atlair, and the forty or fifty little Misses whose good fortune ir was to be present, all said they had a perfectly lovely time. FIIAZEIS,of \\ y alusing, who exhibited some mammoth ap ples and very fine peaches at the late fair, uot to compete for a premium, (though he might easily have taken a prize), but simply to show what his orchard can produce, has placed us under renewed obligations by leav ing the fruit at this office. We never saw liner apples. FRANK DEEGAX, who has held a clerkship for the past year or two in POWELL Si Co's store, lias resigned and returned to his home in Laporte yesterday. Fit AXK is a steady young man of exemplary habits and is one of the most obliging clerks that ever held a situ ation in Tovranda, and has made many friends during his residence here. The band played last evening to a large crowd in the park. The music was excellent and was listened to with delight. The Israelites of this place held impressive services in Odd Fellows Hall yesterday, in commemoration of the Day of At tenement. JOHN MCDONALD, a. highly respected, in dustrious citizen of North Towanda, died 011 Saturday and was buried yesterday morning. The deceased was a moulder by trade and had been employed in this place a number of years. Sheriff DEGAN of Sullivan county passed through town yesterday on his war to Phila delphia with two prisoners, convicted at La porte last week and sentenced to the Eastern Penitentiary. One of them, Titos. SHIELDS. charged with forging a deed, was tried before his llanor Judge Moimow. of tlih county, who imposed a seven year' sentence. TOWANDA, PA., TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1881. The case of LANK vs. PIOLI.KTS is on trial before arbitrators at the Court House. The suit is brought to recover the value of a horse which the plaintiff alledges was killed from being frightened at a barrel which defend ants had left standing beside the road. The arbitrators are Rev. DAVID CUAKT, G. 11. VANDYKK and A. FEE. R. A. MERCUR, Esq., appears for the plaintiff and WILLIAMS, ANGLK & BUKFIXOTOX for defendants. There was a large attendance of ladies at the meeting la Mercur Hall yesterday after noon, to devise plans for raising funds for the Michigan sufferers. Mrs. O. A. BALDWIN was chosen President and Miss LILLIK MER CUR Secretary and Treasurer. It was deci ded to appoint committees to solicit funds and donations of clothing. The town was divided into six districts, according to the lines estab lished by the Benevolent Association, and the following ladies apponted in the several dis tricts: First —Mrs. .1. 10. Ist, 1881, occurred one of the most pleasant gatherings which it has ever been our lot to attend. The occasion was the fifteenth anni versary of the wedding of our much esteemed friends, Dr. A Judson and wife of Litchfield. 111 response to a little missive received a few days previous, we wended our way to the Doctor's. The day was beautiful, and we found the host and hostess in their usual happy mood, surrounded by friends and neighbors from Syracuse, Waverly, Towan da, Sheshequin and Litchfield. The Doctor has just completed a new bouse and is very comfortably fixed indeed. The company en joyed themselves so hugely that the afternoon passed all too soon. A bountiful and elegant repast was served, which by the way was 110 surprise as it is always so when Mrs. .T. has anything to do with it. The Rev. brother Wright, of Horn Tlrook, being present, the Doctor and wife were re-united in marriage, tlie ceremony being in rhyme and very amus ing as well as instructive. Night coming on, t lie guests reluctantly separated for their several homes, having left substantial tokens of their regard for their entertainers and wishing them long life and continued pros perity.
