The Athens Gazette comes to us in a new
"make up" this week. The Gazette is as
newsy as it is neat.
The barn and other out buildings of the
Tioga county N. Y r ., Poor House farm were
burned last Tbussday night.
STEVENS & LONG have just purchased a
large and handsome new safe. It is big
enough to hold the entire stock of an ordina
ry grocery store.
The large barn of Mr. Kl>. FRANCES of
Overton, was burned Thursday night, togeth. 1

A DESERTED COMPLIMENT.—One of our
heaviest tax-payers seuds the following com
plimentary notice of Collector WICK HAM, I
which we most heartily endorse, and print i
with pleasure:
MESSRS. EDITORS.—The plan lately adop
ted by the Council, Commissioners and School
Directors, of giving all the taxes in the bo
rough to oue good responsible man to collect, 1
has met the hearty approval of our people.
The old plan of scattering thq duplicate.,
around among Tom, Dick and Harry for col
lection, led to great dissatisfaction, and we of
ten heard much complaint in regard to it.
Mr. WICKAAM, the present faithful and effi
cient collector, has tilled the office for the past
three years with great satisfaction to the tax
pavers, and if the people are consulted he
will be continued as long as he will consent
to serve. TAX PAYER.
September, 1881.
GOOD, SIMPLE LOGIC.—The untutored
mind has often a short way of taking hold of
great truths which men of culture covet.
Here is an illustration touching the order of
nature. A minister asked an old negro his
reasons for believing in the existence of
God.
" Sir," said he, " I have been here going
hard upon fifty years. Every day since I
have been in the world I see the sun rise in
the east and set in the west. Tne north star
stands where it did the first time I saw it; the
seven stars from Job's coffin keep on the
same path in the sky, and never turn out. It
isn't so with man's work. He makes the
clocks and the watches; they may run well
for a while; but they get out of fix and stand
stock still. But the sun and moon, aud stars
keep on all the while."
•' The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the firmament showeth his handiwork."
Any industrious, practical farmer, with a
small capital, can hear of an opportunity to
buy a farm on terms which will enable him
to pay for it from his crops, by calling at this
office.

and Orphan's Benefit Fund at each assess

age, siuce the foundation of the order, $ll.OO

Order has actually paid to Widows and Or

JOHN DECKER is uow canvasing this place
for an article which ought to find a ready
sale in every household, as it will commend
itself on examination. It is an Ironing Board
so constructed that while it is durable it is
readily folded up and put out of the way
when not in use. We ask for Mr. DECKER
a cordial reception; we believe the introduc
tion of the article he is offering will prove r.
great benefit to all who have ironiug to do.

CALKINS' EMBROCATING EMUL
SION.—J. F. Calkins has boon traveling in
the interest of Dr. O. L. Stevens, oi the city of
Cleveland, Ohio, and in the past three years has vis
ited all the cities and principle towns of our State.
His business has brought him in acquaintance with
many of tkc most eminent and talented Physicians
in the State, and in his intercourse with them has
gathered a number of valuable prescriptions from
which he has compounded an article he calls Calk
kins' Embrocating Emulsion, used as a lotion.
Many of the citizens of Towanda and surrounding
towns by its use are recommending it as a valuable
treatment for Rheumatism, Neuralgia, local and
chronic pains, hack, head or tooth ache, crick in
neck or back, sprains, bruises, sore throat, quinsy,
burns; &c. Price 25 cunts per bottle* Druggists
supplied on liberal terms.
A gentleman in town says, it is the best tiling for
burns I ever had in my house.
A lady in Wilksbarre was cured of quinsy in its
first stages by it when her physician said it could
not be stoppecd.
A young man in Monroe had a severe attack of
Pleurisy the Embrocating Emulsion stopped it at
once. A lady in East Troy says it cured nor of In
flammatory Rheumatism with which she was afflic
ted for more than a year, having kept her bed for
weeks at a time.
A lady in Monroe Township sprained her ankle
so severely that she was obliged to keep her foot on
a pillow, by the use of the Embrocating Emulsion
in three days she was doing her house work, and
was at once cured. An old citizen of Ithaca was
afflicted with a pain in his side, lie could find
nothing to relieve him. lie wws induced to use the
Embrocating Emulsion and writes : F. J. Calkins,
dear si.-: Two applications ot the Embrocating
Emulsion stopped the pain. I was afflicted with
Itching piles. It also stopped them. It is very
valuable. Signed, P. Case.
One gentleman who was suffering with a severe
back ache caused by lying in bed for a long time
with sickness wasjeffectually relieved by three ap
plications of the Embrocating Emulsion.
A lady in our Town who had used the article
said Mr. Calkins ought to make a fortune out of
the Embrocating Emulsion.
A number ot Physicians are using it.
The names of all the above cases can he given
and many more cases added. Try it.
