LKNGTII OK LIKK.—The following table is one that is used by London insurance com panies, showing the length of life at various ages. It lias been the result of careful caleu lation, and seldom and prematuae deaths, as well as lives unusually extended occasionally occur, hut this is a table of average expectan cy of life of an ordinary man or woman. A person one year old may expect to live thir ty-nine years longer; of ten years, fffty-one; of twenty years, forty one: thirty years, thirty-four: forty vcars, twenty-eight; fifty years, twenty one; cf sixty years, fourteen; of seventy years nine, of eighty rears, four. Our readers will easily gather from the above tabulated statement the number of vcars to which their lives, according to the law of av erages may reasonably be expected to ex tend. The lons standing suit against the Packer estate is once more engrossing attention in Carhoti county. On Wednesday, September 7, the case was brought up in Argument Court in Munch Chunk. Hon. S. S. Dreher, of Stroud-burg, is the President Judge, and Associate Judges Leonard and Moensden are on the bench. The counsel for the plaintiffs are F. Carroll Brewster, Esq., Hon. J. W. Campbell and Judge William A. Porter, of Philadelphia. The counsel for tlie estate are Ferman Shepard, Esq., George W. Biddle and George Biddle, of Philadelphia. It is well understood that the claims of the plain tiff involve a vast amount of money, and are founded on a contract said to have been en tered int 25 v ars ago. in which it is a'- ledg -d that Judge Asa Packer agreed to pay to Noble, Ilemmet & Co., a two-tenths por tion of the capital stock of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. The claim amounts to 52.500 f '.000 The arguments are now being made and will continue for some days.- Easton Express. HYGIKNIC VALUK OK MlßTH.— Mirth ha nn hygienic value that can hardly he overra ted while our social life remains what the sla very of vices and dogmas has made it. Joy has been called the sunshine of the heart, yet the same sun that calls forth the flowers of a plant is also needed to expand its lives and ripen its fruits; and without the stimulus of cxlnlerating pastimes perfect bodily health is as impossible or moral and mental vigor. And, as sure as a succession of uniform crops will exhaust the best soil, the daily rep etition of a monotonous occupation will wear out lie best man. Body and mind require an occasional change of employment, or else a liberal supply of fertilizing recreations, and this requirement is a factor whose omKs i >n often foils the arithmetic of our political economists. To the creatures of the wilderness affliction comes generally in the forms of impending danger—famine and persistent persecution; and under such circumstances the modifica tions of the vital process seem to operate against its long continuance; well-wishing Nature sees her purpose defeated, and the vital energv flags, the sap of life runs to seed. On the same principle an existence of joyous drudgery seems to drain thespringsof health, oven at an age when they can draw upon the largest inner resources; hope too often baf fled, at last withdraws her aid; the tongue may be attuned to chanting hymns of consola tion, but the heart can not be deceived, and with its sinking pulse the strength of I f-ebbs away. Nine-tenths of our city children are literally starving for lack of recreation, and uot the means of life, but its object, civiliza tion has defrauded tliein of; they feel a want which bread can only aggravate, for only hunger helps them to forget the misery of ennui. Their pallor is the sallow hue of a cellar plant; they would be healthier if they were happier. I would undertake to cure a sickly child with fun and rye bread sooner than with tidbits and tedium. PENNSYLVANIA STATE SUNDAY SCHOOL CONVENTION.— The Seventeenth Annual Convention of the Pennsylvania State Sun day-School Association will he held in the Presbyterian Church in the city of Johns- town, commencing Tuesday, October Ist ISSI, at 2.80 P.M., and continuing Wednes day and Thursday, October 19th and 20th. Giving full details. FRANK AMMKKMAN, Com'r. CHAS. HINTON, Adjutant. CALKINS' EMBROCATING EMUL SION.—J. F. Calkins has been traveling in the interest of Dr. G. L. Stevens, ol the city of Cleveland, Ohio, anil in the past three years has vis ited all the cities and principle towns of our State. His business has brought him in acquaintance with many of the most eminent and talented Physicians in the State, and in his intercourse with them has gathered a number of valuable prescriptions from which he has compounded an article he calls Calk kins' Embrocating Emulsion, used as a lotion. Many of the citizens of Towanda and surrounding towns by its use are recommending it as a valuable treatment for Rheumatism, Neuralgia, local and chronic pains, back, bead or tooth ache, criek in neck or back, sprains, bruises, sore throat, quinsy, burns; &c. Price 25 cents per bottle- Druggists supplied on liberal terms. A gentleman in town says, it is the host thing for burns I ever had in my house. A lady in Wilksbarre was cured of qViinsy in its first stages by it when her physician said it could not be stoppecd. A young man in Monroe had a severe attack of Pleurisy the Embrocating Emulsion stopped it at once. A lady in East Troy says it cured her of In flammatory Rheumatism with which she was afflic ted for more than a year, having kept her bed for weeks at a time. A lady in Monroe Township sprained her ankle so severely that she was obliged to keep her foot on a pillow, by the use of the Embrocating Emulsion in three days she was doing her house work, and was at once cured. An old citizen of Ithaca was afflicted with a pain in his side. He could find nothing to relieve him. He wns induced to use the Embrocating Emulsion and writes: F. J. Calkins, dear sir: Two applications of the Embrocating Emulsion stopped the pain. I was afflicted with Itching piles. It also stopped them. It is vcrv valuable. Signed, J'. Case. One gentleman who was suffering with a severe back ache caused by lying in bed for a long time with sickness was t effectually relieved by three ap plications of the Embrocating Emulsion. A lady in our Town who had used the article said Mr. Calkins ought to make a fortune out of the Embrocating Emulsion. A number of Physicians are using it.
