The work of the Republican Conven tion, on Tuesday was well and wisely done. It was matter of remark that the personnel of the body was far above the average, while the candidates presented were exceptionally good, and it nitty be said with truth that any of them would have honored the ticket. Locality and availability of course had something to do with the selection, but in no case was fitness overlooked. Every candidate comes up to the standard of the most fas tidious reformer. When the Democratic convention assembles we hope they may present as equally a good ticket, and the campaign will be relieved of much ot the unpleasantness that often at taches to a political canvass. W. T. Ilorton, the nominee for sheriff who is a son of Dr. G. F. Ilorton of Tcr rytown, is a gentleman of affable manners good business habits and of unquestion ed integrity and uprightness, with hosts of friends who are enthusiastically at tached to him. Having acquired a good common school education, he spent two years at the Susquehanna Collegiate In stitute where lie was prepared for the Sophomore year in college. After a year or two spent on the farm and in teaching he enlisted in the Unian army, Aug.,1802 and was chosen lieutenant in Company A of the famous 141 st liegt., hut after a few months service was compelled to resign his commission on account of ill health. After a short rest at home he became connected with the Commissary Depart ment, Army of the Tennessee, with head quarters at Murfreesboro, wlure he re mained until the close of the war, when lie returned home and again engaged in Hie peaceful pursuits of tanning, lumber ing and mercantile business.in which lie lias been fairly successful, lie will carry I ito the office that enterprise and energy which lie has always displayed in his pri vate business. lie is a member of the Terrytown Presbyterian church and 42 years of age. The rcnominafion of George W. ll'nck wan for Prothonotary was not contested lndeed it was demanded by the people of the county with entire unamimity. liis administration during the past term has been such as to earn hi in not only the confidence but the highest esteem of all with whom ho has come in contact. The responsible duties of the office have been Carefully and pleasantly transacted and those who are most interested in the of fice were most anxious for his retention. The universal sentiment expressed in re gard to him is complimentary in the high est degree; but he has honestly won the golden opinions his constituents enter tain for him. We venture nothing in prophesying that his second term will in no wise detract from his merited popu larity. The nomination of Hon. Jas. 11. Webb, for Register and Recorder was asked and Indeed insisted upon by many of the best business men as well as the wisest poli ticians in the county. His long and ac tive career has not left him without ene mies but his bitterest personal or politi cal foe will not deny that he is both '-hon est and capable." During all his public career in places of honor and trust no breath of suspicion of corruption dis honesty has ever atfacheh to him. As a member of the Legislature he was sub jected to peculiar temptations, and by per mitting that which he knew to be wrong might have tilled his pockets with gold, but he maintained his Integrity and is to day a poor man. We believe the people | of the county without distinction of party will esteem it an honor to testify to his pure and upright public life in triumJSh antly electing hitn. The candidate for Treasurer, Kbeu I.il ly, is a new man in polities, though ho has been an active, influential worker in the Republican pnrtv. His personal pop ularity was illustrated iti his canvass for delegates. lie was not only the choice of his own town hut all the surrounding districts. While the aspirants i'or the of fice were all 'rood men, and the chances so evenly balanced that it was impossible to tell where the choice would fall, all wore satisfied the selection of Mr. Lilly was wise and politic. He will have no warmer supporters at the polls than those who contested so closely with hitn for the nomination. Of one of the candidates for Commis sioner, Dmiel Bradford,it is not necessa ry for us to speak. . He has tilled 111• of fice three years and the ability and li leli ty displayed won for him a renomination, wtiich he did not seek. The-Review a few days since suggested that the conven tion should endorse the commissioners and it. could not have done it more em phatically than by the re-nomination of Mr. Bradford. Every tax-paver will feel safe with men of his known anility, ex perience, prudence and unswerving hon esty in charge of the business affairs of the county. His colleague, Myron Kings ley of Standing Stone is a successful bus iness man who has managed his own af fairs well and will bring tu the discharge of his new duties, sound judgment, large experience, independence and strict fidel ity. The nominees for Auditors are both careful business men and all bilk and ac counts will be carefully scrutinized. Their integrity and honesty are above suspicion. They add strength and digni ty to the ticket. No Republican,no citizen of the county, need blush for such candidates. From first to last they are men of the iiighes 1 standing. nn si n ess Cards.
