Mrs. MARTHA STOW ELL, of Wyalusing, has been visiting Airs. MORGAN LEWIS, on Wil liam street, this week, Mrs. W. L. CARPENTER and child and Miss LIRBIK RISSELL have returned home after a visit of several weeks in Williumsport. Mrs. JOHN SIMPKINS and two daughters, of Detroit, Mich., are visiting friends in this county. They arc guests of Mrs. S.'s mother, Mrs. J. 15. SMITH, in North Towanda. WILLIAM M. GREGG, a prominent citizen of Elmira died in Tunkhannock, where he was visiting yesterday. Express agent DODGE informs us that the receipts of the Central Express oflice in this place, for August, exceed any previous cor responding month about $390. Rev. C. T. " We are credibly informed that the report current in some of the town papers in regard to IRA L. WALES starting a daily paper at Sayre, is not true. HIGHWAY ROBBERY. —Thursday a man named BIIENAN, whose home is in Overton, passed through Waverly on his way home from Bath, N. Y.. whre he had been working on the new railroad. While in Waverly ho met and drank with two young men, and proceeded towards this place. About 7 o'clock when he had reached a point just the other side of Hemlock Run, the two men passed him in a buggy. After driving a tliort distance they got out, hitched their horse in the woods, and providing themselves with two stout cudgles, they laid in wait till BRIX TOWANDA, PA., SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, ISBI. AN came up when they approached him from behind and beat him several blows over the head, renderieg him unconscious, and then robbed him of $77) in money. The President slept well during the night, and this morning his condition in all respects is as favorable as yesterday at the same hour. Pulse 100, temperature 98-4, respiration 17. G :30 i\ m. The President has passed a comfortable | day, and this evening appears better than for some days past. lie has taken a lar ger propoitiou of nutriment by the mouth and manifested greater relish for it. Ilis pulse shows some improvement as re gards frequency and strength. The paro tid abcess continues to improve. The wound shows as yet, little change. Tins evening the pulse is 104; temperature, 99.2; respiration, 18. Taking the twenty-four hours through, lie lias had less fever and better appetite than for many days past. The News Condensed. Emperor William is again on his feet. Hay fever is light on its victims thus far this season. Congressmen Henry B. Wright is lying dangerously ill at Wilkesbarre, Pa., and his death is hourly expected. Ilowgate's bondsmen are searching for him. He doubtless will be surrendered to authorities when found. If Howgate escapes, his boudsmeu lose $40,000. Valentine Kammcrer a laborer of Five Points, near Port Carbon, had a knife blade over an inch and a half long remov ed from his brain a few days since by trepanning. S. B. Elliott, superintendent of the Ar not Coal Mines, Tioga county, has been promoted to chief engineer of all llie Blossburg Company's railroads and mines. He is brother of Ex-Repre sentative C. V. Elliott, of Mansfield. Tlie milk dealers of Willianisport to the number of thirty-six met in convention Friday and decided to advance the price of milk from six to eight cents per quart.
