We are reminded that there was a session
of the Pennsylvania legislature last winter,
by the receipt of several cop'.es of the Legis
lative Record yesterday.
A farmers' and grangers' basket picnic will
l>e held at Hiawatha Island, near Owego, on
Saturday next. Col. PIOLLETT and W. A
ARMSTRONG will make addresses.
There will be five changes of the moon
next month, September, which is the only
month in the calendar that will furnish such
a lunar spectacle this year. The moon will
reach its first quarter on the Ist, full on the
7th, last quarter on the 12th. On the 23d
new moon and the first quarter on the 30th.
Our devel, who is a regular church goer,
came in late this morning wearing a grieved
countenance, went, at once to a case and be
gan setting up without copy. When he came
to a rest we took his stick which read as fol
lows and for which he. alone is responsible :
When a man will occupy a pulpit and
speak to a strange congregation for one hour
and ten minutes, pumping up each word
separately and empahasizing it with a pump
handle gesture and drawing out common
place ider.s as with a cork screw or dental
forceps and tiring every body half to death,
making the choir almost sing out of tune be
cause they were out of paticene—"that man's
religion is vain," and so is he, very.

Wilkesßarre yesterday afternoon, where
they go into camp for a week, under the fol
lowing General Order:
Capt. WILT has issued the following Gen
eral Order to his company :

TOWANDA, I'A., August 4th, 1881. \
GENERAL ORDER NO. 9.
I. General Order No 4 from Division Head
quarters fixes the time for the Encampment
from August 23d to August 23th 1881, at
Wilkesßarre, Pa.
11. Transportation, camp and garrison
equipage, and subsistence will he furnished.
111. The annual inspection by the Adjutant
General, during said encampment, is announ
ced to take place on Thursday August 25th,
at 3 p. m.
IV. The Brigade will he reviewed by the
< 'ommander-in-t,'hief on Saturday August 271h
at 4 p. m.
V. The Commander-in-Chief, in General
Order No. 12. announces the following:
"The inspection will he rigorous. Especial
attention will be given lo care, and condition
of clothing and equipments, and number of
articles of each on hand. All rolls must be
completed as near a> may he before leaving
the rendezvous. These encampments are
held under the provisions of, and by authori
ty of the law. It is mandatory, and requires
the attendance of all who hoid commissions
or are serving a term of enlistment.
" Excuses for absence will he entertained
for such reasons only as would prevail in ac
tual service. Officers and men can only be
absent from this service by permission of the
Brigade Commander.
"To be effective and instructive, the en
campment demands the continuous attend
ance of each individual for the whole time
provided for. There will be no payment, for
partial service. If a leave of absence or fur
lough he granted upon surgeon's certificate of
difability, where the disability arises in eamp,
or bv reason of serious illness or death in the
soldier's family, occurring while he is on his
lour of duty, the payment will be in full."
VI. The encampment will occupy but six
days, aud you will receive pay for" five, re
quiring you to lose one day only. In accord
ance with orders from headquarters,none can
be excused from the attendance at this en
campment, except by the Brigade Command
er.
VII. All lines and dues for non-attendance
at drills, are hereby remitted up to June Bth
1881. From this date, ("June Bth), all tines will
he charged aud reported to Headquarters, in
accordance with the law now in force. The
fines for non attendance at regular drills are
as follows: Commissioned officers, 25 cts., Ser
geants 20, Corporals 15, privates, 10 For ab
sence from a company parade the following are
the fines fixed: Commissioned officers fifty
cents; seargeants, forty cents; corporals,
thirty cents; privates, twenty ccots.
VIII. The hook," The Sentinel and his
Duties," will be issued to each member of
the company, as company property. A care
ful stud'' of the book will he required. Offi
cers and men must understand guard mount
ing and their duties, while serving a tour of
guard. Hereafter members of the company
will he reprimanded or punished for ignor
ance of Guard mounting or the duties of a
sentinel.
IX. The members of the company will re
port at the Armory on Saturday, 20 of Au
gust, 1881 at one o'clock p. M. sharp for an
out door drill and company parade, with
knapsack, haversack and canteen.
X. The following appointment of non-com
missioned officers is announced:
