The following sketch of a former principal of the old Towanda Academy, whq died last week, will be read with interest by our older citizens and those wl:o were pupils of Air. GUNN more than thirty years ago. The no tice is taken from the New York Herald of last Thursday. Frederick W. Gunn, principal of •' The Gunnery" f*ch >ol in Washington. Ct., died at his home yesterday. Although not strictly a public man, Mr. Gunn's character and at tainments made Dim a man of considerable influence, and the pronounced originality of hi- professional ideas gave him celebrity as a icaehi r. lie was horn in Washington in 181(1 and was graduated at Yale College with the class of is;',7, together with Chief Justice Waite, ex-Secretary of State EvarG. Profes sors Silliman and Lyman, Hon. Edwards Pierrcpont and others. The success of the school that he started shortly after gradua tion was interfered with by his advocacy of abolition principles, in behalf of which he was most active, speaking in public and as sisting in the escape of runaway slaves. The expulsion of Mr. Gunn's father from the Con gregational Church, for espousing the same cause, was followed by I Do persecution of the son, who was forced to seek a living by lead - ing in Pennsylvania for a time; but he short h returned and lived it down, becoming one of the most honored citizens of Connecticut. Some of the peculiar features of his school have been chronicled hv Dr. Holland in hi " Arthur Bonnieastlc," where Mr. Gunn and the *' Gunnery," appear as "Mr. Bird and tl c Bird's Nest,'' and by W. Hamilton Glenn, the a Mist, in his "Pastoral Days." in which with pan and pencil he celebrated his alma mater under the name of " The Snuggery," kept by Mr. Snug in Snug Hamlet. For many years Mi'. Gunn would have no rules for the ivgu tion of his pupils; but governed them on the theory that hoys as well as men know in stinctively the difference between right and wrong, and he held them responsible for cor rect. behavior. His punishments were always unique and were designed rather for the cor rection of the faults than for the infliction of pain or penal! v. lie delighted in nature, and |.obsessed 3 wonderfully intimate knowl edge of forest and field, of plant and hud life, and in his generous readiness to imparl his knowledge he was to all his friends some thing better than a Burroughs or a Thoreau. His pupils were encouraged in every way to familiarize themselves with nature. He guarded against the danger of a free use of firearms by the following order: —"Never nermit a boy to aim an unloaded gun at you; if you do not knock him down I will llirash you. Never mind the loaded guns, they nev er hurt any otu ; it is the empty ones that do all the mischief." Every iear he look the hoys into camp, and " Gunn's Camp" was one of the features of summer life at Lake Waramang. In teaching the classics Mr. (.nun sought first to make his scholars famil iar with the literature of the authors in hand, leaving a more thorough grammatical train ing until the writer's stile and the seope of hi> work were well comprehended. A large benevolence, the extent of which few per sons knew, interfered with hi* acquiring w alth, although his nstitut on was flourish ing and prosperous. Among the patrons of "The Gunnery" were Henry Ward Beeclier, Mrs. Stowe, General John ('. Fremont, Sena tor Piatt, Senator Dixon. Dr. J. G. Holland, A. S. Barnes. John T. Howard and others. Mr. Gunn was married in 1547 to Miss Abby Brinsmad?, daughter of General Briu-made, of Connecticut. Their only son died several years ago. Mrs. Gunn and a daughter. Mrs. ' John C.
