Public anxiety now that the President lias rallied so completely from the severe relapse of ten days ajjo, has given way to a strong feeling of hope, even confidence that he will certainly recover now within a reasonable time, unless local Inflama tion be set tip in the region where the ball is located, which would appear now to be the principal danger to the distin guished patient. Conservatism in sur- j gen*, as in other matters is often coin mendible, but there are sometimes con ditions in which heroic measures alone, will be found equal to the emergency. The question as to which would, have been the proper treatment in the Presi dent's case remains yet to be positively decided by subsequent results. An im portant crisis in the case has now been safely passed but how soon another may come no one can tell, or that it will not come any day, cannot, I think, he assert ed with any degree of certainty, by eveu the most distinguished of the six attend ing surgeons. The crisis that has been safely passed was met by treatment hero ic in its character, and who shall say that another might not be avoided by a like measure? The bulletin of this morn ing is not quite as satisfatory as for scl eral days past, but no alarming symp toms are reported, and hope still prevails as the high temperature and the excess ive humidity of the atmosphere for the past few days might account for any slight change for ttic worse in his case. Politically everything appears to be very quiet here, now that the New York embroglio lias been settled by the elec tion of two Senators who can and will act in sympathy and harmony with the administration. Just what the effect of Oonkliug's terrible defeat will be remains to be seen hereafter. If he and his friends seek to retaliate by maintaining a "mas terly inactivity," or in other ways at their command, it may result in the de feat of the Republican party in New York this fall, but tiiere are those who do not think such will be the case, or that the fate of the party in any State, or in the country at large depends upon any one man at any time, much less so after that man has abandoned —not to say betrayed —a high trust committed to him by the people of his State, and 1 am one of that kind. I predicted his defeat from the day he resigned and 1 think lie deserved it. I think also that the Republican par ty will still live and move and have a be ing, for great and glorious as has been the work accomplished by it in the past, its mission is not yet ended and a future lies before, pregnant with great events and noble deeds—a future in which it can and will, I firmly believe, make a record such as shall not suffer in the least, when compared with its record for the past i twenty years. Coalition appears to be the prevailing sentiment in regard to the situation in | Virginia, and as it seems to be that or | Bourbon rule for an indefinite period, it j would seem to be advisable to accept the j former as the least of two evils. The mention of \V. T. Davies' name in connection with the nomination for State Treasurer of Pennsylvania, meets with very general and hearty approval from the voters of the State here. His record in the State Senate has shown him to be a man of superior abilities and strict in tegrity, and his nomination for Treasur er would be understood to mean an hon est, thorough, and efficient administra tion of the duties of that important ollice and his election by a heavy majority would be insured beyond a reasonable doubt. It is by the nomination of the best men within the party for office that the party lines will be strengthened and and its power pepetuated. KNOX. The Pennsylvania railroad is beginning to make use of a station indicator, an ar rangement for notifying passengers as to what station they are approaching. At either end of the car is a neat case con taining a piece of muslin or canvass on rollers, upon which is printed or painted in legible letters all the stations of the road. By a lever 011 the locomotive the engineer 011 leaving a station changes the indicator so as to show the next stopping place. It is a complete and convenient affair. Business Curds. CIIAS. K.
