It is our opinion that in the church as in politics, there has been a gradual giv ing way from the olcl-time anchorings; that in consequence there is less of genu ine piety in the church and less of pa triotism in the hearts of the people. In the mad chase for what is called "popu lar religion"—something to tickle the fancy and catch the almighty dollar, the church, irrespective of denominational lines, has "gone over" to the enemy. So many evidences appear that we are some times led to believe that the Devil's prop, osition to the Saviour on the Mount has since been accepted by a large number of His professed followers, in order to bet ter support the pomp and splendor de manded by those who are attracted to the "house of worship" by the highest salaried preacher, the costliest church ediiice, and the gayest dressed attend ants. As in politics, so it is in religion. There is a constant and growing tendau cy to forsake old land-marks; both church and State are more or less inclined to join in the butterfly chase for spoils : and in our yielding to suit the new order of tliiugs, we as a nation and people are growing undemocratic—there is less and less of Christian simplicity, less charity, and more style than a Paris Exposition. —Tioga County Leader. Gov. St., John of Kansas writes: "Our Prohibitoiy law has been in force since the Ist day of May, and it is already prov ing to be a grand success. Take for il lustration the city of Topeka, which has a population of 20,000; there is not a sa loon in the city, where last month there were at least 25. This is the seventeenth day since the law took effect, and there is but one case of drunkenness in the po lice court, and that was of a poor fellow who got druuk on Hostetter's Bitters. The man who sold him the bitters was promptly arrested and lined JjilO. I re spectfully call upon the advocates of li censed dramshops to point to a single town in the United States of even half the population of the city of Topeka that can present such a grand record for so briety as Topoka presents since the law took effect. There is not an open saloon iu Kansas outside of the cities of Leaven worth and Atchiuson, and in those towns sixteen prosecutions are in progress." There continues to be more demand than supply at the Castle Garden Labor Bureau in New York, and this in face of unprecedent emigration. This is signif icant of activity in private and corporate enterprises, and iu commerce and manu factures, but it is still more significant of new homes and wealth-producing fields in the great West. This country is young yet. Ilartmaun, the Nihilist, states that he has no fear of extradition. The question was never raised in England while he was there. The Nihilist wish a constitution al government and would oppose nothing desired by the people. If there is no j change of policy the Czar will die; if his I successor pursues a similar policy he will be killed, and so on. Hartmaiin declares i that he does not intend to organize a So cialistic or Nihilistic party in this conn* I try. A queer announcement comes from Maclrid. The Spanish Finance Minister says he will henceforth publish the truth about the condition of the Treasury. lie begins by stating that Cubji has an un liquidated debt of about ninety millions of dollars of which the Spanish public seems not to have been aware. Cuba is the richest possession of the Spanish crown, but her affairs have always been badly if not dishonestly managed. The mortal remains of Lieut. Nathan Davis and his wife repose peacefully in the old burying ground at Harwinton, Conn. lie died in 1875, and she a year later, and each was ninety-seven years old when the mortal coil was shuffled off. One headstone serves for both graves, and upon it are inserted two stanzas of elegiac verse, of which the following is a literal copy : "Death is a det that's justly due that I hare paid and so must you." "This det I owe is justly due and I am come to sleep with you." Mrs. Davis is still celebrated in Litch field County as the woman who, in her nineties, shot a bear in her garden on a Sunday morning.
