Republican County Convention.
Pursuant to a resolution passed by the Republi
can County Committee in session Friday .June 24,
ISSI, the Convention of the Republican party for
ISSI will convene at the COURT HOUSE in TOW
ANDA BOROUGH on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER
•i, at ONE O'CLOCK, P. M., to make the following
nominations for county officers, to wit:
One person for Sheriff.
fine person for Prothonotary, &c.
One person for Register and Recorder, &c.
One person for Treasurer.
Two persons for County Commissioners.
Two persons for County Auditors.
And for the transaction of any other business that
may come before the convention.
The Committees of Vigilance of the several elec
tion districts will call primary meetings at the usual
p .e-es of holding Delegate elections for their re
spective districts, for SATURDAY, SEPTEM BER
3D., 1881, to elect by BALLOT two delegates to
represent each district in said county convention.
The delegate elections in the BOROUGHS will
Ue organized at SIN O'CLOCK, I*. M., and be kept
open continuously, to clove at 8 o'clock, p. in. in
the districts of Barclay, North Towanda and Ath
ens District No. 3, from FIVE O'CLOCK, P. M..
continuously,until 7 o'clock p. in., at which time
they shall close. And in ail other townships from
THREE o'clock, p. m., continuously until FIVE
o'clock, p. m., at which time they shall close. The
votes shall then be counted and the result certified
by the proper officers of said meetings to the Chair
man of said Convention and a copy delivered at
once to the delegates elect.
The Committees of Vigilance are particularly re
quested to give at- least three weeks' written or
printed notice of the said primary elections, end to
carefully observe the above rules in conducting the
said primary meetlngr.
Only Republicans can participate in said meet

The result of the Senatorial contest in
New York will be hailed with satisfaction
by every true Republican in the Union.
It has happily concluded a trying; and
troublesome episode in the history of the
party; and now that it is over, it only I
remains to congratulate friends of He- !
publican principles everywhere that the .
ordeal which is ended litis left them noth- j
ing to fear for the perpetuity of those j
principles in the future.
Rut while Ave feel the sincerest satis
faction at the result which has been thus
attained, we shall no*} be found amongst
the enemies of harmony and reconcilia
tion—not in the ranks of Mr. Conkling's
defamers, taking glory for his defeat, j
The friends of Mr. Conkling desciwe do-1
cent recognition, and whatever his error i
or rheirs may have been, we shall not join j
any crusade against their leader nor his
followers. Roscoe Conkling lias long
filled a brilliant place in the leadership of
tlie Republican party. Ilis voice has rung
with triumphant utterance in its defence
for many years in the forum and in the
field. lie has always been found in the
thickest of the fight, and many a time in
days gone by the sound of his rallying
cry lias summoned the Republican party
to victorv. It is admitted by all men
competent to make tlie comparison that!
in all the eras of American eloquence—
the days of Webster, Clay and Calhoun,
for an example,—few men have been found
Mr. Conkling's equal in forensic accom
plishments, and no one in a certain sus
tained power of attack and felicity of
phrase, his superior. To his power as a
combatant, tlie Republican party has
owed much in the days of its highest re
noun. when it was moulding the princi
ples sanctified by popular approval and
carried to successful issue on many a
hard-fought field. For this Mr. Conkling
will be always well remembered. For
this he deserves and will receive the grat
itude of every loyal Republican. "What
ever may be in store for this brilliant
leader and eloquent and accomplished
public man, what lie has wrought of ben
efit to the Republican party deserves and
must command a recognition even recent
errors cannot obliterate; and his record
in the past is already joined to its perpe
tuity and is enshrined upon an enduring
page in the history of his country.
Statistics have been gathered to prove
that in the cities of the world which con
sume gas the degree of cheapness of that
article ranks as follows: The lowest
price is in London. Then comes Ghent,
Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Bordeaux,
Antwerp, Paris, Lyons, Marseilles. After
these come New York, where gas is three
times as high as in London. In Phila
delphia gas is as high priced as in New
York, while coal is cheaper than in Lon
don.
The General Term lias refused a new
trial in tlie case of Flannigan, condemned
; to be hung at Buffalo, August 12th, for
I the murder of Ivairns. Tlie case will be
I taken to the Court of Appeals, if a stay
is obtained.
