RUM !
A celebrated western lawyer in an ad
dress to a jury during a liquor case trial,
drew the following vivid, appalling, but
truthful picture ol'rum and its devilish
work:
"I believe that it issues from the coiled
and poisonous worm in the distillery un
til it empties into the hell of death, dis
honor and crime, that it demoralizes eve
ry body that touches it, from its source
to where it ends. Ido not believe that
anybody can contemplate the subject
without becoming prejudiced against liq
uor. Think of the wrecks on either bank
of the stream of death ; of the suicides,
of the insanity, of the poverty, of the ig
norance, of the destitution, of the little
children tugging at the faded and weary
breasts of weeping and despairing wives,
as king for bread; of the talented men of
genius that it has wrecked, the men
struggling with imaginary serpents, pro
duced by the devilish thing; and when
you think of the jails, of the almshouses,
asylums, prisons, scaffolds upon either,
Ido not wonder that every thoughtful
man is prejudiced against this damned
stuff called alcohol.
'•lntemperance cuts down youth in its
vigor, manhood in its strength, and age
in its weakness. It breaks the father's
heart, bereaves the devoted mother, ex
tinguishes natural allectious, erases con
jugal loves, blots out filial attachment,
blights parental hope and brings down
mourning age in sorrow to the grave.
It produces weakness, not strength; sickj
uess' not health; death, not life. It
makes wives, widows; children, orphans :
fathers, fiends; and all of them paupers
and beggars. It feeds rheumatism, nurs
es gout, welcomes epidemics, invites
cholera, imparts pestilence and embraces
consumption. It covers the land with
illness, misery and crime. It fills your
jails, supplies your almshouses and de
mands your asylums.
"It engenders controversies, fosters
quarrels and cherishes riots. It crowds
your penitentiaries and furnishes victims
to your scattblds. It is the life blood of
the gambler, the prop of the highwayman
and the support ofthe midnight incendia
ry. It countenances a liar, respects the
thief, esteems the blasphemer,and honors
infamy. It defames benevolence, hates
love, scorns virtue and slanders inno
cence. It incites the father to butcher
his helpless offspring, helps the husband
to massacre his wife and the children to
grind the parricidal axe. It burns up
men, consumes women, detests life, curs
es God and despises Heaven.
Tuesday's Press gave a rumor as being
current in Philadelphia to the effect that
the Lehigh Valley IHL was to be leased to
! the Pennsylvania PP. This same rumor
has been current many times before, and
I whether the present is any more likely to
become a fact than the rumors which
have proceeded it is of course not now to
be seen. The Valley is a dividend pay
ing road, and it would be advantageous
to the Pennsylvania to control it lor this
reason. Another and more important
: advantage of its location through and ad
jacent to coal property in which the
Pennsylvania is largely interested, and
some of the lines the latter at present
controls connect with it, for instance
the Salisbury, Hazletou and Wilksbarre
in this vacinity and their lines to New-
York, and also to the West, which would
give enlarged control of a kind of trallic—
coal—which is eagerly coveted. It is !
assumed that in case the Pennsylvania,
should get control of the Lehigh Valley
the oilicial management would continue 1
the same or nearly so as now, while the j
policy would undergo such changes as
would conform to the admirable system
of the Pennsylvania, which is everywhere '
noted as having attained to perfection in j
railroading. The transfer would be a gi- !
gantic transaction and we in common '
with all our business people would be J
glad to see it accomplished.— Hazletou
Sentinel.
The Indians at Newajo preservation }
threaten trouble unless the agent, Galen
Eastman, a Presbyterian minister is re
moved. Some time ago, by ill advised
acts, Eastman so excited the Indians that t
they threatened to kill him. Eastman j
was superceded by an army officer but
was recently re-instated. It is reported
that his first move was to endeavor to :
make the Indians go to church and stop '
using tobacco. They number 6,000 •
bucks.
