11. E. BABCOCK and family, accompanied
by 31rs. 15.'s brothers. VAXNIE and WILLIE
WASH BURKE, of Oxford. X. Y.. left yester
day morning for a week's camping out on
the river hank near Standing Stone.
Capt. G. V. MYER left for Gettysburg last
evening to take part in the Summer Encamp
ment of the G. A. lb, Department of Penn
sylvania, which begins to-morrow and con
tinues one week, 011 the famous battle field.
Ex-Sheriff SPALDING, of Athens, was in
town yesterday on his way to the sea-shore.
We are sorry to learn that he is still suffering
from poor health, but hope a sojourn at As
bury Park and sea bathing may invigorate
him.
A. J. EASTABROOK has resigned a clerkship
ill the U. S. Treasury Department, which he
has held for the last ten or twelve years, and
will hereafter occupy his pleasant residence
in this borough. We have 110 doubt he will
find the change very pleasant.
W. R. MAFEITT who was Superintendent
of the X, B. Canal 111 olden times, and well
known here then, was a guest at the Ward

House yesterday. He is slightly bent and
his hair somewhat gray, otherwise he ap
pears as vigorous and active as he was thirty
years ago.
S. B. TIDD invites all his friends to partake
of a free elam chowder lunch at his restau
rant this evening.
The little boy TRIPP, of Canton, who ac
cidentally shot himself with a toy pistol 011
the sth inst, died of lockjaw 011 Wednesday.
The Trustees of Ovvego have passed a res
olution refusing to accept the Waterworks
constructed in that village by the same par
tics who are putting the works in here.
A coal train ran of!'the track near Wyalu
sing last night. The engine went down an
embankment and W. 11. SNYDER, a bnike
man was badly scalded. He was brought up
011 No 12 and taken to his home in Sbeshequin
township.

A DAY IN* THE WOODS.—Christ Church
congregation and Sunday School are intend
ing to hold a Pic Xic at Weston's 011 Wednes
day next, the one held there last year proving
so enjoyable. Full particulars will be given
hereafter. Friends of the Church are invi
ted to join the pie nic. Those who attend
will please bring provisions, and a lunch will
bespread out on the tables, of which all will
partake in common. Tickets can be pro
cured of the teachers.

ceeded by rain in southern portion; north to west
winds; stationary or higher barometer and temper

THE PRESIDENT STEADILY
IMPROVING.
The following bulletin was sent by the
attending to the consulting surgeons at
eight o'clock last evening: " The Presi
dent slept well last night and has been
easy during the day. At the morning
dressing the wound, which is looking
very well, discharged several ounces of
healthy pus. A little solid fragment, that
floated out with the discharge, proved to
consist of a thin scale of bone about an
eighth of an inch in length, with a morsel
of sloughing fibrous tissue and a number
of adhering fibers of cotton and wool,
lie continues to take and digest a reason
able quantity of nourishment. The even
ing hypodermic injection of sulphate of
morphia and quiuia has been continued.
"Praise God from whom all blessings
flow." The dead lock at Albany is en
tirely broken. -V conference of the repub
licans yesterday resulted in the election
ofLapham to succeed Conkling by the
united votes of the party. The vote stood
Lapham, 92; Potter 42.

Robert S. Bartlet an old and highly es
teemed citizen of Binghamton, died on
Thursday morning, aged 73.
Amia Stout, a female smoker of Buffa
lo, N. V., put a lighted cigar in her pock
et and was nearly burned to death.
The net earnings of the Reading Rail
road Coal and Iron Companies for the
year ending June 30th, was §4,088,000
and increase of §OBB,OOO.
A rock-slide occurred in a quarry near
Slatingtou, Thursday. Two laborers
were crushed to death and shockingly
mutilated. A number of others barely
escaped.
A circus was broken up by a mob in
Pottsville, Wednesday night. About a
dozen shots were tired outside of the tent
and volleys of stones were hurled against
it. A boy was shot in the shoulder, a
man struck on the head with a club, and
two circus men badly wounded.
