SIIAW, GEORGE BROWN- 11. W. THOMAS, X. W. WALORON, MILTON LOOM IS, C. L. SQUIRES. It must be exceedingly gratifying to all true and loyal citizens to see the uni versal solicitude shown in the welfare of the President, by all classes irrespective of political creed or sectional strife since the attempt to assassinate the good man. It has brought to the surface strong ties ol general brotherhood and a natural feel ing of common national interest hereto fore hidden deep under partisan strife and sectional hatred. The announce ment of the diabolical act, had no sooner gone forth on the electric wires, than in dignation and sorrow were expressed throughout the land and messages of con doience forwarded to the wounded man and sympathy given ins respected family. And the South, supposed to take little stock in the Chief Magistrate, only as compelled to submit to his rule by the strong arm oftnelaw, lias nobly come to the front, given succor to the nation and exhibited a deep anxiety in the pain ful situation that much atones for its past hatred and disloyalty. It lias been a dangerous channel to pass through, to feel the pulse of the nation in a paralyz ing crisis, but out of the diagnosis comes the gratifying rfcport that we are a united people, healthy at heart and prepared for ordeals and calamities that would throw into a general panic if not produce anar chy in any other nation in the world. The fact is we have a good and wise President and the masses know it. lie was guiding the Ship of State majestical ly along, meeting with remarkable tact and sagacity the adverse winds, keeping oil' the shoals of corruption, command ing the helm himself, not submitting to those of the crew who would usurp his power and direct the course contrary to his own revised and safe chart. We also notice with pride that a day of fasting and prayer lias been appointed by Ken tucky and Arkansas—States lately in re bellion and winch at the President's elec tion gave large majorities against liim. Hon. Joseph E. Brown, of Georgia, in conversation with Postmaster General James recently related an incident which may have an important bearing in deter mining the question of motive in Guit eau's crime. He said thai having occa sion to visit the State Department, May 17, in company with a friend, they met two men coming out, one of whom he subsequently identified from his photo graph, to be Guiteau. lie seemed to be passionately excited, and as they passed exclaimed to his companion : "They have excluded me from the White House but you will see that I will get even with those fellows yet." The speaker's lan guage and manners attracted Mr. Brown's attention, and he thought at the time that vengence of some kind was meant against the Secretary of State. When he learned subsequently from reading Dis trict Attorney Corkhill's narrative that the prisoner resolved to kill President Garfield on the eighteenth day of May, the day following this speech, he went to the District Attorney, satisfied himself as to the identity of the speaker, and gave the above testimony, which will probably be used in the government's case. The Governor of Texas having refused to unite in a call for a da}- of general Thanksgiving when the President shall recover, a mass meeting, composed of men of all political parties and creeds, was held in Dallas to protest against the attitude of Gov. Roberts regarding it. Speeches were made bj r prominent citi zens and the following resolution adopted : "liesolved, That the citizens of Dallas will spend the day set apart by other States as a day of jubilee and thanksgiv at the recovery of our President. Other cities of Texas are invited to do like wise." President Garfield and Judge Black have recently become the owners of a large farm in Alexandria county. Va., ly ing within view of the White House. They acquired a small portion of the tract partly by purchase and partly as a fee for services. The whole tract was mortgag ed, and in order to save their part they instructed an agent to buy the whole of it when the forecloseure sale occurred. While the President has been lying ill the sale has been made and his farm se cured. IMPORTANT TO TRAVELERS.— SpeciaI in ducements are ottered you by the BURLING TON ROUTE.
