The JDailv Review. Towanda, Pa., Thursday, July 14, 1881 EDITORS . S. W. ALVOKD. NOBLE N.ALVORD " Daily Review" only 85 emit per month. Try it. Garfield's Grains of Gold. EXTRACTS AND SENTENCES FROM HIS SPEECHES AND LETTERS. After the battle of arms comes the bat tle of history. For the noblest man that lives there still remains a conflict. I would rather be beaten in right than succeed in wrong. Present evils always seem greater than those that never come. Growth is better than permanence, and permanent growth is better than all It is one of the precious mysteries of sorrow, that it finds solace in unselfish thought. Statesmanship consists rather in re moving the cause than in punfsliing, or evading the results. Ideas are the great wariors of the world, and a war that has no ideas be hind it is simply brutality. Eternity alone will reveal to the human race its debt of gratitude to the peerless and immortal name of Washington. I doubt if any man equaled Samuel Adams in formulating and uttering the fierce, clear and inexorable logic of the revolution. Through the whole web of national ex istauce we trace the golden thread of hu man progress toward a higher and better estate. Occasion may be the bugle call that summons an army to battle, but the blast of a bugle can never make soldiers or win victories. It is as much the duty of all good men to protect and defend the reputation of worthy public servants as to protect pub lic rascals, An act of bad faith on the part of a slate or municipal corporation, like poi son in the blood, will transmit its curse to succeeding generations. Bad faith on the part of an individual, a city, or even a state, is a small evil in comparison with the calamities which follow bad faith on the part of a sover eign government. If there be one thing upon this earth, that mankind love and admire better than another, it is a brave man; it is a man who dares to look the Devil in the face, and tell him he is a devil. We should do nothing iucousistant with the spirit and genius of our institu tions. We should do nothing for revenge but everything for security; nothing for the past, everything for the present and future. In the complex and delicately adjusted relations of modern society, confidence in promises lawfully made is the life blood of trade and commerce. It is the vital air, labor breathes. It is the light which shines in the pathway of prosperity. The germ of our political institutions, the primary cells from which they were evolved, was in the Xew England town, and the vital force, the informing soul of the town, was the town meeting, wiiich, for all local concerns, was king, lords and commons in all. There is scarcely a conceivable form of corruption or public wrong that does not at least present itself at the caster's desk and demand money. The legislature, therefore, that stands at the cashier's desk and watches with argus eyes the de mand for payment over the public count er is most certain to see all forms of pub lic rascality. I look forward with joy and hope to the day when our brave people, one in heart, one in their aspirations for free dom and peace, shall see that the dark ness through which we have traveled was but a part of that steru but beueflceut discipline by which the great Disposer of events has been leading us on to a higher and nobler national life. There is no horizontal stratification of society in this country like the rocks in the earth, that holds one class down be low forevermore, and let another come to the surface to stay there forever. Our stratification is like the ocean, where ev ery individual drop is free Jto move, and where from the eternal depth of the mighty deep any drop may come up to glitter on the highest wave that rolls. The following is from his speech to the Ohio legislature after his election to the U. S. Senate, being a tribute to the char acter of his competitor, Senator Tliurman : "I say, moreover, that the flowers that bloom over the garden wall of party poli. tics are the sweetest and most fragrant that bloom in the gardens of this world, and where we can fairly pluck them and enjoy their fragrance it is manly and de lightful to do so." Mr. Speaker, I know of nothing more dangerous to a republic than to put into its very midst four millions of people, stripped of every attribute of citizenship, robbed of the right of representation, but fcound to pay taxes to the government. If they can endure it, we cannot. The murderer is to be pitied more than the murdered man; the robber more than the robbed. And we who di-fraud four mill ion citizens of their rights are; injuring ourselves vastly more than we are the black man whom we rob. BUSINESS LOCALS. Go to G.
