Tiie wealth of the United States, in
comparison with that of other nations, i>
the subject oi' a recent paper in JThrper's
M'nj(v:nv The united kingdom of Great
Britain and Ireland heads the list with a
capital of £ 11.!00,0i.)b,000, \vitli an average
income per inhabitant of £155. France
has the second place in point of capital,
£55,700,000, on;): but is tlie fourth in tlie
matter of average income, £125. The
capital of the United States is £52,000,-
Ooo.000; the average income £155. Ger
many has £22,00n,000,000 of capital, with
nil average income of £857. The low
countries have £11,150,000,000 capital,
£l5O of average income. Russia has but
£15,000,001,000 of roubles. 'The annual
accumulation of new wealth is, in the
united kingdom £525,000,000: in France
£575,000,000; ill Germany, £200,000,000;
in the United States, £*25,000,000. In
the last decade we have added more to
our wealth than the capital value of Italy
or Spain, with their accumulated inheri
tances of 2,000 years. Every sun sets
upon our people better olf by £2,500,000
than on the day before. The contrast
between England, for example, and Italy
calls attention to the important fact that
but little of man's labor survives him.
Without incessant reproduction a people
soon become poor. Food is the thing
least stored. It has been estimated that
there is never more than one year's sup
ply on hand, perhaps not so much. Only
ideas and certain works of art seem to be
capable of indelinite accumulation.
Bishop Stevens of Pennsylvania, who
has just left Philadelphia lor a brief va
cation in lowa and the mountains of Me-
Kean county, l'a., issued the following
pastoral letter to the Episcopal clergy
before his departure:
Having been asked by some of the
clergy of this diocess as to whether they
might not use in the public services of
the church the newly revised version of
the new testament, I think it best to state
that, as the general convention of the
church in 1525 adopted King James' ver
sion of the bible as published by Eyre £
Strahcr as the standard edition, and in
corporated their action into what is now
canon 18, title 1., of the digest, no clergy
man is at liberty to use any other version
in his public ministrations, The church
having taken careful and deliberate action
and that action having been the law of
the church for over 50 years, no clergy
man will lightly violate the canon to
which he has promised obedience.
Henry Ward B eclior preached on po
litical corruption, Sunday morning. lie
said that many men who have been raised
to high places were of a mushroom char
acter. The great vices of politics was I}'-
iug and whiskey. If the lures spread for
our legislators were known to the public,
they would make the cheeks of every vir
tuous household blush for shame. The
foundations of morality are shaken in
order that gamblers in politics might suc
ceed, for it is considered disgraceful to
fail. lie refenc Ito bribetakers, and said
there were not many but would take a
bribe. They were like Aldermen in some
cities who only take office to make money.
But it was gratifying that in all history
no line of kings ever stood higher for
morality than the American Presidents.
Hon. A. M. Pratt paints this picutre of
the President and wife twenty-three years
ago at Bryru, Ohio: "Twenty-three years
ago Mrs. Garfield sought and taught
scholars in painting and drawing in this
then very insignificant village, and not
getting very large classes, living mean
while in my house, the guest and friend
of my then wife. The future President
1 was frequently entertained at my table;
he is a young, strong, green, great-heart
ed, large-headed youth, but two years
from college, hopeful, full of life and
! push; she graceful, sweet, amiable, retir
ing, with a disposition lovely as a star
j lit sky—both poor. Their fortune was
their youth, health, hearts, intellects,
I hopes, and, glad am I to say, love."
Several geiitlamen have remarked the
| anxiety of the children to learn the news
from the President. Many eases have
| been reported of very little ones kneeling
| for their evening prayers who, without
any advice or suggestion, have uttered
I '
I most touching and loving prayers for the
1 wounded and s tiering President. We
j heard of one young Miss in this place,
who after the news was received on Sat
urday evening that the President was
dead, made earnest suplieations for him
before retiring, as she said it did not
seem possible to her that he was really
dead. Who dares say such prayers are idle
and unheard and unanswered by die Great
Ph ysieian?
The attempt on President Garfield's
life forms the leading topic of discussion
in the English weekly journals, which
comment in the same symyathetic strain
as the dailies.
