MISS MARY MOSCRIP, who is well known
here as a superior dress maker, has again
taken up her residence in Towanda and may
be found at Mrs. LEWIS' on William st.
We are indebted to MOSES GUSTIN for a
sample lot of "Monarch of the West" straw
berries grown in his garden at Mt. Tisgah.
The fruit was luscious iu flavor and of very
large-size.
Rev. Doctor MCAULEY of Philadelphia,
assisted in conducting the service in the Pros:

E. L. PAVENRORT, of Canton, is an ac
complished wheelman in Northern Pennsyl
vania. He came from Canton to this place
Saturday eveniug in 3 1-2 hpurs, returnijpg
yesterday ihorning, 011 a Columbia bicycle.
Mr. WM. MIX, who has been ill for some
time was so much worse yesterday morning
that his famiiy were alarmed aud summoned
Dr. WEY of Elmira. The (loctor arrived
on No. 15 last night but we have been unable
to learn either the doctors opinion or the con
dition of the patient this morning.
. Yesterday was the hottest day of the sea
son, the thermometer averaging nearly one
hundred in the shade.

cation Society, will address a Children's and
Adults' meeting in the Baptist Chureli to
morrow (Tuesday) evening. Everydody is
invited.
Miss M. A. BULL formerly of this place is

Florist IRVING had quite a number of beau
tiful Night-blooming Cereuses open Saturday
evening. To give people an opportunity of
seeing the rare flowers tliev were exhibited
at the drug stores of C. T. KIRBY and C. B.
PORTER. Mr. IRVING has other plants of
the same variety which will be in bloom this
week. ' '•
D. PATTENITO, an Italin barber who has re
sided in this place seme years past, represent
ing himself as a single man was somewhat
astonished on Saturday morning at being
confronted by a wife and twelve years old
daughter, whom he had deserted in the old
country nine years ago. Two brothers of
Mrs. P.'s residing in Brooklyn,N. Y., accom
panied her to this place. Matters were soon
amicably arranged and PATTENITO is now
supporting his family, as lie should do.
A writer in the Elmira Advertiser says:—
"Ulster valley is leading off well in the grow
ing of tobacco this summer, the ROCKWELL
hoys having chauged their seed during the
past winter, have now a very fine crop grow
ing. W. H. ROCKWELL has plenty of leaves
that will measure 22 inches loug, and 15 inch
es wide. Who can beat that. MURDOCK,
MCKAY and VANDYKE & PARK have very
promising crops."

WM. VAN BRUNT died at his residence 011
Temple street, Suuday morning, aged 70
years. Mr. was an old and re
spected citizen of this place and a great suf
ferer for years. He leaves a large family and
circle of friends to mourn his loss.— Oicego

Mr. VANBRUNT formerly lived in Wy,sox
and was well known in this place. .
The Episcopal clergy of tins district wib
hold a special Convocation this week, iu
Bradford, Susquehahna and Wyoming count
ies. Services to-day at' 3 and 8 p. u., in old
St. Mathews Church, Pike, of which the Rev
GEO. I*. HOPKINS, is the esteemed rector.

Wednesday A. M., in St. Andrew's Church,

A ADVENTURE.—One day last
week two Misses, who hope, 110 doubt to he
called young ladies by and by, thought they
would play boys and wade the rLVer; so they
hied themselves away to the other side and
pulling off shoes and stockings, undertook vo
wade from thence to the island. "Alas for
human greatness;" the hold on the bundle
flipped and away went shoes and stockings
floating down stream, aud soon were lost in
the water. After screaming themselves
hoarse, the services of two boys were secured
and shoes and stockings from home were ob
tained to enable them to return to town,
while the others went food to tislies.—

Congressman Hendrick IT. Wright, of
Wilkesbarre, Pa., is dangerously ill.
Rev. J. B. Kerfoot, bishop of the Pitts
burg Episcopal Church diocese, died yes
terday.
Prof. C. Y. Riley has been appointed
Entomologist of the Departmedt of Ag
riculture.
Walker Blaine has entered upon his
duties as Third Assistant Secretary of
State.
The excess of assessments on the capi
tal and deposits of banks in May,amount
ed to $41,000 more than those of last
year.
Governor Hoyt has been requested to
address flic Governors of the States and
Territories on the subject of issuing a
concurrent thanksgiving proclamation
over the recovery of the President.
Lightning struck the British bark Bea
trice at Philadelphia on Friday, and her
cargo of oil exploded. A sailor was
blown into the water and drowned, aud
the captain and six others were injured.
The vessel was burned.
Before sailing lor home Sir Edward
Thornton was presented with an address
of respect and affection by British resi
dents of New York, Minister Thornton
has for the thirteen years past held the
position that he now vacates, and in that
time ha& won many warm friends, who
are loth to have him make his home else
where.
