As these are vacation days with most of onr colleges, the commencement exer cises having already been held in most of them it may not be inopportune to say something on the important ques tion. There are reported to be in the United States some 850 colleges to which can be added several hundred seminaries, academies and institutes, lesser lights in the educational tirmanent This is a state of things of which we all are proud as we know that education is one of the corner stones of our Republic, one of the levers of our power and a leading cause of our greatness among the nations of the world. Of late years there has been a •'big run" with "our boys" for an educa tion at these institutions and to take a course, graduate and receive a sheep skin is a commendable enterprise, a worthy uccomplisnment for which we honor them, notwithstanding the side show at tachments iu way of base ball, rowing matches and an occasional play spell at hazing, one of which the public has con demned more or 1 ess. In view of this "run," a discussion is going on as to the real benefits and practical usefulness de rived by the student in the course. A moug the objections raised is that the tcndancy is to drift the mind into new and foreign channels, drawing it from natural grooves, thus warping those in born tust s traits and propensities which when properly developed, make the great geniuses of the day and the master intel lects of the world. It is further urged that the training not only draws the mental faculties into new grooves, blunting those natural in clinations with which the student is gift ed, but often leading him to choose a pur suit in practicing which he encounters friction and thus pegs away through life, out of gear and pulling against the tide of reaction. It is also said that the many books, lectures and the general paraphernalia surrounding him over-tax, befog and bewilder the mind, cramming it with theory, stimulating it beyond its natural strength and capacity, thus mak ing a wreck of what might have made a brilliant intellect if properly developed. And last it is claimed that the studies are of no practical use to the masses, being adapted to those occupying high posi tions in the literary and scientific world. These are a few of the objections raised? Others could be given but we deem it un necessary. By giring these objections we would not have the reader infer that we sub scribe fully to them nor that we are op posed to colleges or the boys taking a course. What we would specially say is, that too much of the matter obtained during the course is of but little practi cal use iu the general pursuits of the day, particularly to the business class who figure so largely iu all the leading enter prises and who need vigorous minds, molded in natural channels or a practical aud experimental training in early life fit ting tliem for the pursuit they follow. This is a business age and the United States a business land, all enterprises moving off at electric speed, afiordiug no delay to unearth fossils nor time to pur sue. The masses have no appetite for dead languages nor abstruse sciences; they choose the rough and ready, and useful matters of life, cutting oft' all superfluities iu science, art and literature. We have no snail pace and fogy systems, such vs prevails in Europe. Here our air is charged with electricity, it permeates every avenue of our political and business sphere, giving a double value to time aud curtailing our use of it. Life is too short and our routine of living run ou too rapid a scale to give four years to college, and two or three thereafter learning a profes sion. It may do for some, but not for the masses in whose interest we speak. The right metal is the main thing and if that be in a person he will die out a name aud fame without the hot house culture of the college. If the dead languages or high methods, or any deeply hidden sci ence be needed, he will fathom the depths and polish his mind and shine with the great geniuses of the age, and best of all lie will be vigorous and self-made.
