NOBLE N.ALVORD " Siait j Review" only 85 centi per month. H'ry it. The Real Number of Comets. The real number of comets which have : visited these parts of space must be very nnicli larger, probably amounting to not i less than 3,000, since it would appear; from the experience of the past century 1 that only one in every live becomes suf- j ticiently conspicuous to the naked eve to ! attract general attention. A considera ° | ble number of comets have doubtless ap- j peared in past times in the southern hea vens only, so as to be invisable in Europe ; and allowing for this, we shall probably be within reasonable limits when we as sume that upwards of 4000 have approach-! Ed the sun within the orbit of Mars since | the commencement of the Christian era. NUMBER OF AUTHENTICATED COMETS. The following table exhibits the num ber of sufficiently authenticated comets in each century:— Comets Century. Observed in Europe & China. I '22 I 22, II 44 I 27 V 10 V 2", VI 22 VII 10 I 42 X 20 X 30 XI 20 XII 05 XI 20 X 27 XV 31 XVI 25 XVII 04 XIX (first half) 80 Giving a total of 007 Comets consist of a round body, term ed the head, to which a long stream of light is generally appended, called the tail, which stretches across the heavens for some considerable distance. The tail is often of great length; that of 185S called Donati's comet, being 50,000,000 miles in length, while that of the comet of 1843, one of the most brilliant ever known was quite three times as long.
