County Commissioner IIURST returned from
a visit to friends in Lewisburg yesterday.
Judge PAUL P. MORROW and son CHARLIE
are visiting Judge MCCOLLUM in Montrose.
Commissioner RANSOM and Clerk LEWIS
were in Wellsburg and Elmira on business
yesterday.
Miss HATTIE LITTLE, of Towanda, is visit
ing Miss LIDA DAY of this place.— Tank

Mr. M. M. EDDY, of Towanda, has been
visiting his daughter, Mrs W. B. MARQUAUT,
North avenue.— Owego Times.
Prof. DOANK of the Mansfield State Normal
School, and Mr. ALBERT, a Wilkesßarre
teacher, were in Towanda yesterday.
BROWN, the popular First "Ward rcstau
ranter, invites his friends to partake of ox
tail soup this evening, at his expense.
W. S. NEVINS, who has been living in Wa
verly some time has removed his family to
this place, and again occupies his own house
on Fourth street.
Miss ALICE PEET, one of the most success
ful and popular teachers of the Wilkesßarre
public schools, is spending the summer vaca
tion with her parents in Burlington.
The wild berry crop promises to be very
large.
JOHN ADAMS' ice wagon still makes its
daily trips.
Old potatoes are sixty cents and new ones
one dollar and sixty cents per bushel.
Ice Cream, Strawbarries and cake this
evening at TITUS'. Come in and have a dish.
All members of Naiad Engine Co., No. 2,
are requested to meet at their rooms at 8
o'clock Monday morning, preparatory to go
ing to Athens on train 30.
Towanda will be very quiet on the Fourth,
as nearly all business will be suspended. The
Catholic picnic on the fair grouns will at
tract most of our people.
MORRIS SEELY, a native of Wells, this
•■ounty, and for some years past a prominent
merchant of Elmira, died in that city yester
day morning, aged 59 years.

says such obligations are due to-day.
Everyone wishing a good time on the 4th,
should take in the pic nic on the fair grounds
in East Towanda. Admission to the ground,
only 10 cents. Come and help along a good
cause.
Doctor TAYLOR, at the Universalist church
will to-morrow morning take for his theme,
'* Is there a personal devil, who rules in pow
er and majesty over a kingdom of Hell as
God does over Heaven!"* No eveniug ser
vice till further notice.
Miss EMMA S. ALLEN, one of the speakers
now in the field under the auspices of the
National Prohibition Alliance, will deliver a
Temperance Lecture in the M. E. Church, to
morrow evening at 7:30 o'clock. Services
will be omitted at the other churches. Every
body is invited to hear her. Admission free.
A number of persons charged with keep
ing disorderly houses on the plank road, were
before Justice CODDING yesterday. E. ROWE
and ANNIE FORMAN were discharged on
promising to leave town which they did
forthwith. Mrs. JILLSON her daughter aud

Grand Jury.

A clear, star-lit sky, a mild atmosphere and
j the well welcomed programmes of Mr. FITCH,
the great confectioner, brought out a multi
| tude of happy but attentive listeners to the
j Park and its surrounding buildings, to the
J Pagoda Germania Band Concert, last evening.
' The Comet also seemed to draw near aud as
j sume a subdued and respectful twinkle during
the musical performance. The Waltz, by
Baskquet, was pleasing and well produced.
The Polka, Young America, by Levy, the cel
ebrated soloist, in which he has so often ex
hibited his wonderful execution, again
brought out the exquisite tongueing and care
ful phrasing or Mr. FRED SMITH. 111 anoth
er number, Mr. WALLACE KEELKR, in solo
passages, displayed his elear K flat clarinet
tones. A sky-flying ad libitum was well
taken by band-master WALKER. In one of
the movements of the last number, the bassos,
baritones and tenors had the lead, when the
rich toned tuba of Prof. STCLEN could be
clearly heard. This was the tinest harmony
of the evening; but the entire programme
was a delight and a luxury.
Strayed, from my premises in Towanda
twp., near D. D. Mavnard's, on Monday last,
a pale red cow. about 8 years old; white
strip in face, and a piece of right horn broken
oft. A liberal reward will be paid for the re
turn of the cow or information where she

The News Condensed.
The profits of Sing Sing prison for
June were 84,000.
The Yale —Harvard boat race yesterday
was won by the Yale crew by two lengths.
The public debt was decreased 812,323,-
150 53, last month, The reduction for
the year is 8101,578,483 3G.
The receipts of the New York post
office for the fiscal year were 83,782,000
and the expenses 8850,000.
The Yorktown Centennial Commission
has accepted a model for the proposed
monument. It will cost 8100,000.
Fourteen hundred and eighty-six new
postoftices have been added the past year
to the number already existing.
Piatt has peremptorily withdrawn from
the Senatorial contest and it is quite
probable that Cornell will be chosen his
successor.
The Tribune does not believe the story
connecting Senator Piatt with a disgrace
ful scandal at Albany, and to its everlast
ng credit refuses to print it.
The United States Treasurer yesterday
mailed 54,000 cheeks, representing 83,-
400, 000, in payment of the interest on
the registered four per cents of 1907;
also, 1,500 cheecks representing 82,000,-
000 in payment of the semi-annual inter
est on the Pacific Railway currency six
es.
