Tli© Daily Review. Towanda, Pa., Thursday, June 30, 1881. KBITORS . 8. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N.ALVORD. *< Daily Rrtiet* " #•lff MS craft per mmmnth. Try 41. State treasurer. The only office to be filled this fall is that of State Treasurer, and both parties will strive hard for the prize. Of course everything being equal the Republicans stand the best show, as the State is un doubtedly Republican by a handsome ma jority, and can be safely relied upon by that party when great State or National issues are at stake, but this year the can vass will to a great extent be divested of purely political interest, aud the party that wins must present a candidate whose personal fitness and past public record are above suspicion. The Republicans of this county have presented a candidate for State Treasur er, who is not only popular where he is personally known, but has made a record as State Senator, of which the people of the whole State are proud. He has been on the right side of every important ques tion brought before the Legislature, and by his bold advocacy of the right, as he has seen it, has won the esteem even of his opponents. He is a careful, system atic business man and the duties of the office would be carefully and honestly discharged by him. Another important item to be consid ered, is the fact that Senator DAVIES is one of the most effective speakers in the State, and could make a personal canvass of great value to the party. The REVIEW is not au organ, but we most sincerely hope the Republican con vention may nominate Mr. DAVIES; and we promise him the hearty support not only of this paper but of his entire party and many warm personal friends outside of it in the Northern Tier. A race which will doubtless attract im mense interest is being arranged to take place on the Coney Island Jockey Club Course during the spring meeting of 1883. The conditions are: For 3-year-olds, SSOO entrance, half forfit, with $20,000 added by the Coney Island Jockey Club, distance one mile and five furlongs, Messrs. James 11. Keene, Pierre and Geo. L. Lorillard, 1). I). Wethera, Augusta Belmout, the Dwyer Brothers and several other prominent turfmen arc already sud scribers. Among the Dwyer Brothers' entries is the brother of Luke Blackburn, purchased at the recent Belle Meade sale. The presumption is that the stake will a raount to nearly $50,000. The extensive works of the Clearfield Fire Brick Company were entirely des troyed by fire Sunday moruing. A ser ious couflagation was avoided only by the wind beiug favorable aud the exertions of the cltizeus. The loss is not kuowu, but the property was insured for $12,500. The fire is supposed to have originated in the flues. Bradford Couuty is the first iu the field to choose delegates to the next Republi can State Convention, with instructions for State Treasurer. The choice ofßrad ford is Senator \V. T. Davies, who was oue of the most conspicuous figures in the contest over the United States Sena torship at Harrisburg last winter, and who has a clear record as au honest and able legislator.— Philadelphia Press. The Board of Managers of the National Temperance Society, at a meeting in New York on Tuesday, adopted resolutions recognizing tne pending temperance campaign in North Caroliuu as oue of great moment to the cause of temperance iu the Southern States, aud urging the voters of that State, irrespective of parti san consideration, to ratify the prolii )i --tory law enacted by the Legislature.
