REUBEN HAIGIIT, a well known, prom it
nent citizen of Burlington township, died at
his home near Mountain Lake Sunday even
ing. It is supposed an injury received some
time since, by a horse falling upon him was
the cause of his death.
Everybody who visited Ilarrisburg during
he latter years of JOHN SMULI., made his ac
quaintance as he was one of the most con
spicuous men about the State Capitol. His
constant companion was a little black-and-tau
dog. The Hahrisbnrg Patriot of Saturday
thus notice tiie death of the canine.
The famous black-aud-tan terrier, Dolly, a
pet of the late JOHN A. SMULL, and a cher
ished favorite of WILLIAM P. SMULL, died
yesterday morning, aged twenty-one years,
and was buried on the premises of Mr.
SMULL'S residence. In 1801, Dolly took bar
seat on the desk of the late resident clerk of
the house, JOHN A. SMULL, where she sat
every day the legislature was in session until
the death of Mr. SMULL. She was a general
favorite with all and received many caress
es from the great political leaders of lYmi—
svlvania and others. Dolly's death has touch
ed a tender place in the heart of her master.
The following act of the Legislature, which
is now a law, is important to botn school di
rectors and teachers:
SECTION 1. That from and after the pas
sage of this act, it shall be the duty of the
school directors of the several school districts
of this Commonwealth, and they are hereby
required to allow the school teachers employ
ed in the said school districts, who are actually
engaged in teaching school therein, the time
and wages whilst attending and participating
in the exercises of the annual county insti
tutes for the improvement of teachers.
SEC. 2. That at the close of the annual
sessions of the said institutes, it shall be the
duty of the several county, city and borough
superintendents to make a report to each
Board of School Directors in their respective
jurisdictions, setting forth the number of
days that each teacher shall have attended
and participated in the exercises of the said
annual Teachers' Institute, which said report
shall he the basis for allowing the teachers
their time and wages; provided that the pro
visions of this act shall not. extend to the
First School District of Pennsylvania, nor to
the counties wherein special laws regulating
or relating to county institutes are in force.
HONORS TO A WILKKS-BARRE PUPIL.—
The commencement exercises of St. Cecila's
Convent school of Scranton, took place in the
Academy of Music at that place yesterday
afternoon, and 111 them Miss ANNIE O'NEILL,
daughter of I). L. O'NEILL. Esq., of this city,
one of the graduates, took a prominent part.
Of her musical attainments the Republican
of this morning says: "Miss O'NEILL may
be regarded as phenomenal. Her rendition
of a morceau from II Trovatore displayed a
fine conception of the power of music in the
interpretation of the loftiest sentiments, her
touch being exquisite and her style unexcept
ionable. In her accompan incut* she display
ed the same elevated taste and correct judg
ment." Miss O'NEILL was also one of four
who upon two pianos, played the "Trump
ets of War," she accompanied Miss HANNAH
LYNOTT'S vocal solo, "Last Hours of Joan of
Arc," and was one of the three who recited
the valedictory, which the Republican notes
as a touching poetic production. She was
awarded a silver medal for proficiency in ar
ithmetic and algebra, and a laurel wreath
and gold cross for proficiency in music.— Un
ion-Leader, Wilkes-Barre.
Mr. O'NEILL is a native of this county,
and his father lives in Overtoil.

Frank Wenck's house the other night and

it.
