out bass fishing yesterday.
Master KNOWLTON MIXER, of Buffalo, N.
Y., is the guest of Ron DIE MEIICUR,
W. C. BOGART, Esq., has potatoes as large
as goose eggs, grown in his garden this sea
son.
Col. OVERTON,S son, Master FRANK, is the
guest of FRANK EILENEERGER at the Ladds
burg trout ponds.
Doctor JOHNSON of Waverlv, came down
yesterday morning and spent the day with
his brother, Doctor T. B. JOHNSON in this
place.
lion. GILES ROBERTS, one of the most en
terprising citizens and a leading republican
of Wyoming county, is in town as a witness
in the equity suit.
Mrs. S, B. EILENBERGER, her daughter,
Miss LIDA, and son, Master FRANK have gone
to Mr. E.'s trout ponds at Laddsburg, to rus
ticate a few weeks.
Mr. IL 31. WELLES lias left at this ollice
two baskets of Sharpless strawberries, of
mammoth size and most delicious flavor, for
which we return our best thanks.
We very much regret to learn that JAKE
MARSH, of this place, met with an accident
on the cars in Kansas City the other day, ne
cessitating the amputation of a foot.
Hon. HORACE IIORTOX of Shores IIILL, al
leged mail contractor, was registered at the
Ward House yesterday. He says the Star
Route investigations do not disturb him.
lion. E. L. HILLIS says be feels more than
compensated for the loss of the s.joo which
the State Treasurer refused to pay him.—
Mrs. IIILLIS yesterday morning presented
him with a beautiful girl baby.
Mr. GUY PECK has taken a clerkship in
tne Citizens National Bank and under the
training he will receive there, we prophesy
will make an excellent banker. He is an in
telligent, honest, conscientious boy.
FRED 3IERCUR, general superintendent of
the Lehigh Valley Coal Co., at Wilkes-Barre,
arrived in town last evening, accompanied by
his wife and family, and are gues'.s at the
Central Hotel.— Hazleton Sentinel.
The Athens eorrerpondent of the Sunday
Telegmm says: •"We regret to learn that
our old friend, ELY WRIGHT, who recently
moved from here to Wassau, Wis., had his
right hand so badly mangled that it became
necessary to amputate all the fingers."
Doctor NEWELL, of Wvalusmg, who en.
jovs the reputation of being one of the very
best dentists and most correct business men
in city or country, was in town at an early
hour yesterday morning,looking as bright as a
new Bland dollar, and his face the very pic
ture of happiness. It was all explained when
we heard him shout to a friend, "It's a boy!"
Mother and baby both doing well.
The heaviest shower of the season was ex
perienced last evening.
A coal train oil' the track at Meshoppen de
tains No 8 this morning. It will not reach
here till 8 or 9 o'clock,
A six months' old baby of 3lrs. CROWLY
in East Towanda, walks with perfect ease all
about the house.
JOHN COXKLIN, a former resident of Uls
ter, died in Oil City, last week. The remains
were brought to Ulster for burial.
Another disgraceful row in Arcade block
Sunday evening. Not very pleasant for re
spectable residents of the neighborhood.

an invitation from the Athens Fire Co., to
visit that placo on the Fourth. They will be
accompanied by the Liberty Corners Baud.
The new draught team lately put 011 the
wagon run by LOUMOUE & TOMPKINS are
very generally admired. They are blacks,
weigh thirty hundred, and were purchased
from a Bradford county farm. They walk
away with a loaded wagon just as if they
did'nt know it was there— Elmira Adv. This
is the team Mr. IIAGERMAN of Asylum sold.
PRIZE MONEY RIFLE MATCH—At Towan
da, Pa., July 4,1881. Under the auspices of
the Towanda Rifle Club. The match will be
called at 1:30 p. m. Open to all comers. Dis
tance 200 yards. Ten rounds. Position,
standing oft' hand. Entrance fee, SI.OO. lie
entries permitted. Military ltiflcs, if used as
such, allowed two points.
First prize Twenty Five per cent of En
trance money; Second prize Fiften per cent
of Entrance Money; Third prize Ten per
cent of Entrance Money; Fourth prize Five
per cent of Entrance Money. Ties decided
according to rules of National Rifle Associa
tion. All are invited to participate and make
the first match of the Towanda Rifle Club a

The President and Secretaries Hunt and
James returned to Washington yesterday.
Prof. Draper, of New York, successful
ly photogiaplied the comet on Friday
night. It is said this is the first time
that this has ever been done.
Reports from forty towns in Western
Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia,
regarding the condition of crops and of
business are very encouraging.
A Mr. Christmas, the son-in-law of the
famous Mrs. Myra Clark Gaines, shot
and instantly killed Mr. Whitney, the son
of Mrs. Gaines by her first husband.
A railroad accidsnt in Mexico 011 Satur
day caused the death of two hundred sol
diers. Only sixty persons 011 the train
escaped alive, ami of these forty were in
jured.
It is asserted that Count Herbert Bis
mark will be appointed Minister to Wash
ington after his marriage with the Count
ess Carolath, with whom lie eloped some
time ago.
A dispatch from Denver, Col., gives
details of an attack by Pahutes upon cat
tle-men; a two days' running fight was
kept up; many ludian and some white
men were killed.
